Countess Markievicz died on 15 July 1927 in Dublin. A founding member of Fianna Éireann, Cumann na mBan and the Irish Citizen Army, she took part in the Easter Rising in 1916. She was sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment on the grounds of her sex. She was the first woman elected to the UK House of Commons. She was elected Minister for Labour in the First Dáil, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Europe.

Lamhfada,

@bullivant it really is sad when you consider she only lived 11 years after the rising, such a short time. Got to see the Free State yes, but that also includes seeing a lot of the Conservative and reactionary elements winning out post revolution.

Lamhfada,

@faduda @bullivant There's almost something symbolic about her death in the same year as the formation of Fianna Fáil.

Lamhfada,

@faduda @bullivant 26? Now why is 27 stuck into my head?

Thanks to @kd for highlighting this government survey on climate change.

Worth filling out, if only to counter the individualistic bias in the survey itself and leave comments.

I feel like they want answers like everyone should buy a new EV and install a wind turbine, rather than face the systemic changes like critically reducing car use that are necessary and making public transport/cycling better.

Lamhfada,

@psneeze @kd Yeah, could get that sense in the survey - weird how they don't mention all the agricultural animals, just pets.....

Lamhfada,

@alisca @oisin Well Civil Servants are used to getting far more unhinged communiques from the general public I am sure!

So apparently Britney Spears yesterday posted an image of 19th Century Occultist classic "The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic" by French Ceremonial Magician Eliphas Levi.

    Would not have predicted that.

    Lamhfada,

Did not have Britney Spears taking up Ceremonial Magic on my 2023 predictions list, but you do you Britney.

I have to say I am thoroughly enjoying the fact that the leader of the actor's trade union which is joining the writers trade union in action is Fran Descher from The Nanny. I only saw a brief clip of her speech but she gave a great talk about solidarity in the face of corporate greed.

feels very bad today, not sure if weather/humidity, lack of sleep over the past few days, a mild hangover from like 4 pints in Pantibar last evening or just being in Dublin.

    Lamhfada,

@ronanmcd Very possible - antihistamine and inhaler taken and I'm going to take a nap and see how things are after that!

The Irish Women who fought the Nazis in World War II.

Interesting episode of the Irish history podcast.

Apparently today is the 30th anniversary of Mary Robinson signing into Law the bill which decriminalised homosexuality in Ireland.

Which means every Irish person over 30 has lived in a country where being or was illegal.

We really owe a debt to all the people who fought hard for LGBT rights in 70's, 80's and 90's (presumably before but not aware of any orgs or individuals who may have been able to fight against Catholic hegemony & oppression)

Question for the law heads - if is illegal under law if the Irish data protection commission ruling headlines I'm seeing are accurate....

Does that mean that any instances which federate with threads are then open to EU data challenges?

    Didn't actually realise that the subreddits of /r/StarTrek & /r/DaystromInstitute had a community @ https://lemmy.world/c/startrek@startrek.website @startrek.

Given Trek fandom are often the first colonizers of online spaces in internet history (eg newsgroups) losing major Star Trek communities is big L for Reddit.

EDIT: Not permamently locked subreddits, got that wrong I think!

    Lamhfada,

@startrek Now I just have to figure out how Lemmy groups work from the point of view of using Mastodon.

    Lamhfada,

    @psneeze @startrek

Me, holding on to my twitter account even as that site is actively being destroyed by the world's biggest Capitalist loser and I start to explore and

    Lamhfada,

@actsukrit Interesting, thanks! will see how it goes, I work a lot of shift work when my regular feed of mostly people in Ireland are not active so having a fuller feed isn't necessarily bad.

Have made a Lemmy a/c with the same usernname and my subscription is pending to @startrek so either way will get some content hopefully.

Love that the main platfrom I use to make a living depends on the whims of the stupidest rich person that ever lived

    Lamhfada,

@Ciaraioch It's just so bizarre that something that went from fun diversion that kind of worked when it first started but then became a mostly reliable global agora has been speed run into the ground because of one man's vanity and ego.

Enough Social Media schadenfreude and laughing, I'm going to watch something on netflix or elsewhere (seeing as official month has gone by and I haven't been to a single pride and my boyfriend is still in another country). I'm thinking El Dorado: Everything the Nazis Hate, a documentary about a queer Weimar Republic club. Although I've heard good things about Nimona too.
