Just made a sort of combo stir-fry/stew that will serve for multiple meals. This is another of those recipes that I improvise from what I have on hand.

Trying Cella Bio. Good product, but tub is too small for my taste: makes loading a large brush more difficult.

Back on Planet Java Hive with an iKon razor

After a quick pre-shave prep using Grooming Dept Moisturizing Pre-Shave, I loaded my Antica Barbieria Colla brush with Phoenix Artisan's Planet Java Hive, a CK-6 soap. I very much like the honey+coffee fragrance of Planet Java Hive, and the lather was of course excellent (CK-6). Unfortunately, this fragrance has been discontinued. iKon's excellent stainless-steel open-comb razor is a favorite, both comfortable and efficient.

Extro Arzachena and Henson AL13, with PA Astreus 22mm synthetic brush.

I attached my blog to my Mastodon account, so this post was supposed to go to Mastodon, but it hasn't yet appeared, so...

Extro 17 Stormo and El Fantasma “Naranja” Double Slant

My other Antica boar brush, the Barberia Mondial, which I used this morning, seems also to be breaking in as well as the Barbieria Colla I used Saturday. Soon, I must use both brushes in the same shave so I can compare directly. In the meantime, both are much improved. The soap, Extro 17 Stormo, is quite good and thoroughly enjoyable.

As a follow-up to your post on Indian banning the export of all rice except basmati:

It seems clear that we are leaving the "gradually" phase of climate change and entering the "suddenly" stage. Things are happening as foreseen, but now rapidly.

I'm curious about your take on the evolution science in this article. Are the ideas presented well-accepted mainstream?

I'm surprised that cooked grain — intact whole grain — is not more popular. It certainly doesn't require any particular skill, and the grain, once chilled, can be used in many ways: in salads, stir-fries, stews, and on its own.

I know people eat brown rice, black rice, and wild rice (in North America), but wheat berries, whole rye, einkorn, Kamut®, emmer, spelt, barley, .... They're all good, but don't seem to be eaten all that much.

I guess people prefer pulverized grain: bread, pasta, ...

I'm backing off from Mastodon a bit: too many crumbs, not enough cake. I want to use time formerly spent on Mastodon to read books.

Still will post from time to time, but not so much time spent here.

First sprout in indoor planter

The purple basil is first out of the gate, but I can see rosemary and garlic chives starting to stir. I added new seeds to green shiso and red shiso, though they may simply take longer to germinate. Germination times: basil 3-10 days; rosemary 14-30 days; chives 14 to 20 days, shiso 7-21 days.

The weird lighting is from the grow lights. To my eye, the light is white, but the camera doesn't see it that way.

Thanks to @LifeTimeCooking for pointing out the benefits of eating sprouted grain and a Canadian source of sprouted grains (and pseudo-grains and beans and lentils).

I blogged the details, and note the warning against doing the sprouting yourself Grains apparently are more risky to sprout than the usual run of seeds.

My cooking plan faded

I had grand ambitions, but what with cleaning and grocery shopping and making a salad for lunch, making 4 chia-pudding breakfasts, and getting in some reading (Naomi Novik's In His Majesty's Service), some projects have been pushed to tomorrow. The salad, however, was excellent. 1/4 small red cabbage, chopped 2 big handfuls chopped kale, massaged 1 large yellow bell pepper, chopped…

It also has a few red jalapeños. I fermented it for 3 weeks but could have gone longer.

The fatal flaw of Libertarianism

Libertarians seem to me to be trapped in a cage of logic, unable to move beyond that. As Oliver Wndall Holmes, Jr., noted, "The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience."

Example: Logically, a person who does not distinguish continuous v. discrete in using less and fewer will also fail to make the distinction in using much and many — but experience shows that, most who fail at less/fewer succeed at much/many.

Yet another great Monday-morning shave, with Yazu/Rose/Patchouli and the spectacularly good Superslant

This Plisson European Gray badger shaving brush was a gift from The Wife, who bought it on the recommendation of the last Master Barber in Paris. He was right, although at the time I was hypnotized by silvertip badger and failed to realize what an excellent brush it is. Over the years, I have come to appreciate it more and more, and this morning I greatly enjoyed the…
