A “nibling” is the word for the child of one’s brothers or sisters (like “sibling” and “niece” combined), but the word – coined in the early 50s – still isn’t included in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Yet, newbie words like “thirst trap” have made the cut.

Turns out, pleasant-sounding words might have a leg up:

@TheConversationUS My family has used the word for decades. The "n" is not specifically from "niece," though. I think the "n" reflects the fact that "niece" and "nephew" both begin with "n", and of course that "n" replaces the "s" in "sibling."

But perhaps I'm wrong. Do you have some reason to think the "n" comes specifically from "niece" and not, say, "nephew"?

Chickpea-flour pancake problem solved. The problem, for me, was the tofu: it did not work. Chickpea-flour pancakes made without the tofu (and with seasonings) work fine. See https://leisureguy.ca/2024/01/19/chickpea-pancake/

Roasted veg.

About 3 cups Brussels sprouts, halved lengthwise
1 long slender leek, cut into 1" / 2.5cm sections.

Soak in brine for 30 minutes; drain, dry, toss with a little EVOO and sprinkle with:

Aleppo pepper
Trader Joe's Sriracha Seasoning
Maldon salt

Toss to mix seasonings, roast at 390ºF for 16 minutes, shaking halfway through.

Put in a bowl, peel a lemon, blend it, & pour over the veggies.

How my garden grows.

I received an indoor planter as a gift, and it is now in operation. In photo below, from left: 2 green shiso, 1 rosemary, 2 red shiso, 1 garlic chives, 2 purple basil.

Turmeric & Black Pepper

It's time to get back to making my own non dairy cheese again. Commercial ones are so expensive and not particularly healthy.

This particular one, a firm one made with turmeric and a black pepper coating is my adaptation of one from a recipe "Oil Free Melty Cheddar" from Miyoko Schinner's book "Homemade Vegan Pantry".

It's so good that my father-in-law (non vegan) ate half in one go!
Not quick but so worth it!

I had planned on an interesting aftershave today, but things went awry.

Still, a very good shave overall..

Location? What does that mean? You already have my city and street address. Do you want my location in my address? I'm in the basement den in the computer room... :/

(For lack of anything better, I typed in the name of my neighborhood, lol.)

Golden Monkey Tea

In my regular tea order (Sencha, Pu-Erh + white teas) I usually get sent a sample I have never tasted.

While I wait for my sourdough whole grain flatbreads to bake, I decided to try this variety I was sent.

I am no tea connaisseur, but this has a lovely mild taste, beautifully sweet and delicate in the first (western style) brew. The tea in the pot is the second brew.

Today I used the softest shaving brush I own, and I loaded it at length to make sure it had plenty of soap aboard. Result: terrific lather, no problem.

The difficulty I initially encountered was purely user error..

"The russian government has jailed virtually every individual who has dared to speak out against its repressive political system in recent years. It has effectively become a carceral state, in which hundreds of Russians and an untold number of Ukrainians, including thousands of children, have been taken hostage by the Kremlin, their whereabouts, in many cases, unknown."

@accretionist @LynneJones @anneapplebaum

I agree that I missed the point (that in Russia people are jailed for opinions). I do think that "carceral state" would be a state that incarcerates many of its citizens, and with that meaning, the US is more a carceral state than Russia.

The ambiguity vanishes if the phrase "carceral state" is not used. It would be more straightforward to say that Russia imprisons people for political reasons.

I would add a small handful of walnuts that for an extra boost of flavor and nutrition.

Very nice. That would also work with tempeh, which I prefer because it's not so highly processed as tofu is — tempeh is just cooked (beans and grain, in the tempeh I make) and then fermented for two or three days.

I believe autocorrect (AKA autoerror) changed goji berries to "going" berries.

You might consider dried bayberries instead (available online and in Mideasstern delis). See https://youtu.be/Bgp4_N2Sjrg
