I just want my software to render pretty things.
Regularly restarting dream projects but always forging ahead.
Ruby, Smalltalk, Rust, C, C++, in order of taste.

I have no idea what I'll be posting here, but I'll try to at least keep it to interesting stuff.

@beeoproblem This is the point where I shill Kagi. Yes, it's paid, but it really is quite good. Try the free trial and honestly see for yourself. Best search engine around that I've found. And is actually a search engine.

@aeva I got a new set of lens filters finally come in today (ND and CPL filters), so I can go out more regularly and shoot in brighter light with higher ISO films on my Nikon FM, so I'll likely be going for a walk with that tomorrow. Super excited for that.

So, Unity’s new CEO is from Zynga and EA (and more recently, Fitbit). Mkay, mkay.😢 https://investors.unity.com/news/news-details/2024/Unity-Appoints-Matthew-Bromberg-as-New-CEO/default.aspx

But also just... fucking senior advisor to Blackstone.

The Leaving Rust Gamedev article resonates with most of the frustrations I've had working on the internals of Tangerine (C++) since I converted it from being largely single threaded spaghetti to aggressively concurrent spaghetti, and that's making me think maybe I'd have a better time if I picked a different language for the hot paths, because necessary non-compulsory refactoring also kills iteration time.

I just don't know what though, because nothing ever seems to fit the bill of what I need.

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva In Aus, at least when I was growing up, we used pound and hash interchangeably when refering to #, so back when I first encountered C# in the early-00's, I called it C-Hash for multiple years until at some point I read somewhere that it's sharp.

By the way: You probably remember that Reddit post about Vultr changing their TOS to steal your data from two weeks ago or so.
I learned today (more or less randomly) that they backpedaled on that and removed the sentence about granting them a free license for all "User Content": https://www.vultr.com/news/a-note-about-vultrs-terms-of-service/

I can't tell if it really was a misunderstanding or if Vultr just found out that their existing customers are more valuable than being able to sell their data, but good to know they changed it.

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel If you look into it, the whole thing was a genuine mistake. The reason why the clause was there was never supposed to be intended for VMs (it just accidentally did), it was intended for the likes of the forums, so they can take guides and articles written there and publish them as proper wiki-form guides. Shit like that.
The fact they immediately back-pedalled and fixed the mistake is indicative of that. Genuine mishap.

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel Oh I totally don't blame the reaction, it was 100% reasonable, and while Vultr's initial response was... frankly terrible corpo bullshit, they got there pretty quickly.

Really it mostly just amazes me that people didn't notice it for so many years.

I am envious of people who can function with eg: 6 hours of sleep, because for me anything less than 8 hours and my day is a mess.

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ocornut I have the opposite problem. Oversleep for me near consistently will end up with all-day massive migraines and I'll be basically useless. People always love to talk up sleeping-in, but to me the idea is a nightmare, haha

aeva, to random
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I forget what, but something reminded me of how in elementary school they put me in a speech therapy class where they essentially just taught me to talk slower. I never really thought much about that, but while I was thinking about it now I was reminded of how over the years I've had so many friends where we would just have long deep non-linear mile-a-minute conversations about stuff we're excited about and, well, most of them also have been diagnosed with ADHD at some point lol

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva What I've learned from my watching ADHD-diagnosed girlfriend is that it's not that ADHD makes you learn worse or anything, just learn differently.

Style of teaching matters massively, and from what I've seen what works with ADHD and the way the school systems insist is the only way to teach things dont tend to have great overlap.

Present my girlfriend a topic in a way she finds interesting, and in ways she conprehends well and she'll recite it back to you 2 years later.

I want to play the original Deus Ex.
What's the best way to do so in 2024?
I want a mostly vanilla experience, but proper widescreen support and other fixes for modern systems (and bugfixes for the game if it makes sense) would be nice. And it should work with Wine or Proton if possible..

Somehow there are too many options (Deus Exe, GMDX, "Deus-Ex-1-Community-Update-", Revision, several different renderers, ...)

Sounds good, but the only Steam Family Sharing update I want to see is:

  • No longer locking the ENTIRE library if a family member is playing a completely different game to what you want to play

That has always pissed me off about it.

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gamingonlinux
When family sharing was first introduced this used to be the case, it would only ever lock out the individual game being played, the problem was people abused the system as just a way of making a super-library with friends. It really was a perfect example of a few people ruining a great thing for everyone else. So unfortunately, it's not getting changed.

Unclean data in action: oh, you’ve never met a Nushi? Me either. But this database claims it’s the second most common given name in the world — because it’s Chinese for Miss/Madam

It’s understandable if weird artifacts like this slip in at , but #2? When you subtract the number of “Nushis” from China, there’s only a few hundred people named Nushi in the world. This doesn’t pass the most basic data health check imaginable, but they published it, it ranks highly on google, and doubtless it’s getting cited all over the place.

(hat tip to Soron for helping me diagnose the source of the fake name) https://forebears.io/earth/forenames

With prominence like this, how long until we start seeing it actually pop up as a name?
Prospective parents looking through name lists for their child, come across this and think "that sounds nice"
Which, by the way, means the data becomes even more hellish.

So the Vine–Matthews–Morley hypothesis says that new crust is created by cooling of magma at mid-ocean ridges, and since the magma goes through it's curie point as it cools, it ends up recording the current polarity of the geomagnetic field. As the magnetic poles flip over time, this means the sea floor contains a bunch of different magnetic field directions, going back and forth and thus recording the historic days of the magnetic reversals.

So...

A small video preview of a camera panning beneath the level where you meet one of the characters, Angel. She talks to you. There is a stylized grungy UI next to her where text writes out what she says. She's surrounded by whatever elements from the surface are clipping through the floor.

I wonder if all the game design colleges are gonna stick with teaching their students Unity and nothing else, or if I'm gonna start seeing student resumes with Godot experience soon 🤔 (the studio I belong to is an Unreal shop)

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@aeva I think that may be one of the best things to come out of this - Even if Unity reverts 100% to prior status quo, they've burnt bridges so hard that so many people formerly specialising exclusively in Unity are gonna be diversifying a lot more. I just hope that hits education too.

Turns out x86’s ”mov” instruction is turing complete and movfuscator can build a version of DOOM* entirely comprised of mov instructions:
https://github.com/xoreaxeaxeax/movfuscator/blob/master/validation/doom/README.md

(*Slight performance caveat applies)

MissAemilia,
@MissAemilia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@ocornut Almost, if not all, ISA's MOVs should be, as long as you have some degree of access to functional units, et al. They are the only instruction needed to build a functional ISA, even, to the point you can do some hilariously efficient things with them like TTAs.
