Life is a preposterous horror.

Money speaks for money, the devil for his own
Who comes to speak for the skin and the bone?

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.

Thinking about why it is a double u in English but a double v in French

My parents loved to drive when I was growing up. They still do now, come to think of it. It was their favourite activity, just popping in the car and driving two or three hours in one direction, no destination in mind, and then turning back.

They drafted me every time. We couldn't have the light on in the car because it would disturb father to read so that was out most times at night. I didn't have a walkman or tape player. It was difficult to read. And of course there was radio on their terms.

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

Which was either right wing nonsense or nothing at all. Bonus points in that I was never allowed to sleep in the car, because that would ruin my night you see.

I think what I hated most was that I wasn't permitted to just, you know, zone out with empty brain and open eyes they would always try to engage as soon as that happened. I still fucking resent that too.

Bonus Points: Patrick had to take a bus 1 hour to school in the morning and 1 hour back home at night.

I guess it wasn't enough to inflict Hell on a person, you also had to make sure they were fully experiencing the Hell with no way out of it.

They are good people mind you, but this I forgive. I also wonder if it's a large of the reason I immediately moved as downtown as I could, never learned to drive while I a little bit regret, and don't do anything that takes more than 20 minutes to get to and back.

PatrickoftheG,

@Cassandra I wonder if it's easier for the youth these days, what with everyone having the internet in a pocket. I think long drives and miserable shopping trips would have been a lot better had I something to distract myself with.

@kcarruthers This is a worryingly common issue in North America too. A lot of dams went up during the Great Depression as make-work projects. There hasn't been a lot of maintenance. There's not a lot of budget for maintenance.

I came so very close to "big winning" IVAN for the very first time. I have been playing this for like 15 years. I even managed to trap Shererax the Mistress Queen in one part of a level, meaning she didn't have time to behead me, the usual thing that ends my runs.

I killed myself by drinking sulfuric acid by accident.

I am so angry at myself.

Hear a shocking claim and don't recognize the source?

Discard it. If it's real, it'll be on AP/Reuters.

And no, this isn't unique to the US, watch out regardless of what country you're in esp during election years.

📺 Cooking shows are a happy place. Just wrapped SALT FAT ACID HEAT (2018) @ Netflix, a 4-part series with chef and author of the bestseller, Samin Nosrat.

▶️ 1:32 trailer plays in the post.

@DemocracySpot I am not a person who cooks or enjoys cooking or even cares too much about the food part.

I loved the Hell out of this series, my partner too, and watched Salt/Fat/Acid/Heat it at last three times now just because of how fun it is.

By the way, Switzerland, get your shit together.

My marital status is "single".

Yes, I got divorced. Dude even remarried.

I DO NOT NEED TO GIVE YOU INFORMATION ABOUT DUDE EVERY TIME I DO SOMETHING OFFICIAL. WE WERE NEVER EVEN MARRIED TO EACH OTHER IN SWITZERLAND.

So fuck you for making me put "divorced" on every form and then information about my "former partner".

I am trying to parse in my head how something so backward can still exist. Lord I am sorry that you had to put up with this nonsense.

It's amazing how much AI is just poor people in India, Philippines, or even El Salvador, doing work remotely for Americans. Looks like remote work is viable after all, hmm?

Probably a mistake to let property developers so easily bribe politicians at every level.

PatrickoftheG, to random
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

What I don't like is that Israel says, as long as you have a strong enough religious belief, you can:

Take someone's else's land
Seize their property
Collectively punish them
Detain them, indefinitely, with slim pretext
Kill them
Deny them democracy

This sounds too much like the antisemitism of my ancestors. I am not willing to forgive my ancestors. Sincere religious conviction did not make it right to do that to Jewish people. It horrifies me Israel says that was permissible. It wasn't.

Google Search is the next Craigslist: a neglected giant vulnerable to disruption. AI will ravage its ad revenue by surfacing answers, not links. The moat was never the algo, it was inertia.

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan It will all suffer the same fate though is my guess. The more popular it becomes the more monied interests will seek to subvert the answers to redirect people to what those people clearly do not want.

Greed will overturn the balance of what is an acceptable amount of subversion and people will run to the next alternative that isn't so unbalanced and the cycle will repeat.

The search, long subverted, will become useful; the search, long useful, will be subverted. Thus it will ever be.

Random weird habits confession.

I really like drinking shots of pickled pepper juice. One of my longtime fave snacks are pickled peppers. Just not sweet pickled ones - only like the salty sour spicy ones - I hate sweetened pickled stuff.

I finished off a jar of pickled banana peppers. I am now enjoying shots of the juice.

PatrickoftheG,
@PatrickoftheG@mastodon.social avatar

@msquebanh I will pinch beef bullion cubes for a flavour hit every now and then.

I will take a swig of soy sauce and follow it with a shot if milk because it makes an interesting after taste.

I am weird.

"Dune," "Foundation" and "The Three Body Problem" were all supposedly unfilmable, and yet here we are. With that in mind, the A.V. Club's William Hughes writes about other sci-fi novels that deserve their shot at the big screen, including "The Caves Of Steel" by Isaac Asimov and Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand Of Darkness." Tell us in the comments which classic science-fiction stories you'd love to see on film or TV — and if there are any existing adaptations you think shouldn't have been made.
