I am craving a good letter subscription... subscription boxes are a bit much, but I would love some surprise snail mail. Why are there no based mail subscriptions?...

One of my favorite tidbits:

In many parts of Greece it was believed that vampires can't cross salt water. Because of this, they often buried suspected vampires on desert islands.

Greek vampires also had an affinity for shoemaking.

So... there are probably a bunch of fashion-forward vampire islands in the Mediterranean somewhere 😄 😄

I'm reading a book about the Montreal Women's Symphony Orchestra that was founded in 1940 (because women were generally not considered fit to be performing musicians in orchestras at the time). It is inspiring and fascinating, and goes on my "how is this not a prestige TV show yet?" list.

So, just to recap:
Hungary has a new law that forbids any queer content to be presented in any form to people under 18. This involves all books with any reference to LGBT+ (including, ironically, Harry Potter). These books can only be sold wrapped in plastic, and in the adult section of bookstores. Stores have already been fined for millions of Forints for not complying. This week, they are also being taken off the shelves in some stores completely.
I feel helpless.

@TarkabarkaHolgy@ohai.social avatar

Update: books are being removed from stores that are "within 200 meters of a school or a church" 🤦‍♀️

Son of the White Mare is a magnificent, bizarre, almost-lost animation classic, newly available on blu-ray. I've never seen anything like it, and neither have you.

Bought this book during Traveller Pride Week, and it is an absolutely marvelous collection of folktales. Written and illustrated by Travellers, first of its kind. I highly recommend it. 🥰

This book keeps amazing me. There are so many tales in it about the kindness of (and towards) animals.
In one, a queen tries to flee an abusive husband but fails; she decides to raise her daughter to have a chance to escape. In the end, friendly fish help the princess AND the queen get away.
In another tale, one of the Death Coach's horses escapes because he pities people, and becomes a helpful spirit instead.
