@GinaRCollia @bookstodon sudden urge to do the Mummy bit and shout "No! You must not read from the Book of the Dead!!!!" 😀

@GinaRCollia @bookstodon we have a lovely retired academic who we order a lot of Egyptian history books for. He once ordered a huge facsimile edition of The Book of the Dead. Sadly he had never seen the movies, so he was bemused when we tried that line on him as he picked up the book!

@bookstodon Even if it doesn't catch on, I would like to institute a hashtag which already exists, I believe? Anywho, whatcha reading?

Ben H. Winter's new book BIG TIME, and it's really good so far. It is lean, so perfect for those who hate padding in their stories. I don't want to give away the premise, so I will just say that it's a bit of a thriller that involves time itself.

Last week I asked for short book recommendations from folks, and got some great suggestions.

Yesterday I finished Something Wicked This Way Comes which was eerie and wonderful (thanks @witewulf), and immediately started The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa (https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/abed019a-491b-4c7d-80c5-10d4a080e4c5). I’m about half way through, and am fairly sure it’s going to make me cry. I can’t find who recommended it though, but thank you whoever you were.

@DJDarren if you like that, I read a lovely Japanese one in translation last year, She and Her Cat. We see the lives of people in a neighbourhood, but through the eyes of the cats who live with them.

Hey - a question for you! Currently in India and purchasing to bring home. Planning on buying "The Priory of the Orange Tree" by Samantha Shannon. I've been wanting to read it but the library waiting list is 1,000 miles long.

Is it worth also buying its sequel "A Day of Fallen Night" as well?

Both are CRAZY cheap but quite thick. I also don't usually purchase both books in a series before reading the first. Thanks!

@bookstodon

TheEdinburghBookshop,
@TheEdinburghBookshop@bookish.community avatar

@seanbala @bookstodon They are both excellent reads, although the second one isn't a sequel, per se, I think it is set in a different period to the first novel (same world though)

Hey , have you come across any books with misleading and / or bad blurbs? Please share!
I just finished Wole Soyinka's "Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest People on Earth" and.. that book has a misleading blurb with a big spoiler. Wish I hadn't read the blurb. (Good book, though. More on that later.)

TheEdinburghBookshop,
@TheEdinburghBookshop@bookish.community avatar

@ferngirl @writingcommunity @bookstodon Yoko Ogawa's The Memory Police was being promoted as some sort of Japanese take on 1984, which it really isn't. Had my book group do it, everyone loved it, but going in reading the "echoes of 1984" blurb" meant we all had the wrong impression at the start.
