Day 29: Who's feeling shame in your story? Is it justified?

A teen has been duped into betraying information about his family by a tutor. Shame is pointless, and his parents would never shame him, but they do hope he learns discretion.

Maggie's diary: My humans set up a second tower for me beneath the skylight. I can scale it to reach the top of the hutch and lie in the warm sunlight watching the crows overhead. Or I can sleep on the level that's taller than my female human. Or hide in one of the boxes. Well done, humans.

It's like it's 1970 again. Protests on campuses against an unjust war, a genocide, cops raiding and rioting on campuses, students fighting power, investigations into the leading republican, for dirty tricks and illegal acts, women fighting for the right to control their own bodies and the state governments saying NO - DIE BITCH!

Yep, it's 1970 all over again.

Today is an important anniversary.

73 years ago, on April 23, 1951, in Farmville, VA, Barbara Johns led a walkout of her segregated high school to protest the unfair and deplorable conditions of her school.

What?! You don’t know who Barbara Johns was?

She led her walkout more than 4 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus, and before MLK, Jr. embraced nonviolence as the way to equality.

21. Do you agree with Rose Tremain, who says you shouldn't plan a book's ending; it must be earned?

The quote sounds strange and I'm not familiar with it, so I'm going to go with other people's interpretations and say that if you have a planned ending and the story needs you to adjust it -- do so. Clinging needlessly to an outline will only lead to frustration and stress.

I don't like the "earned" language here.
