I've wondered for a while now - is there any research on map routing algorithms that allow for significantly longer routes, which meet other criteria like "more peaceful" or "simpler" or "less pollution"?

The excellent app (based on data) allows for quiet/balanced/fast routes, but "quiet" isn't quite what I want.

For example part of my route from work to Euston could go via the canal around Regent's Park, but that option is never suggested as it is 10min longer:

Suggested 21 minute cycle route from near Paddington to Euston Station mostly along busy roads

@Korny Bikerouter has tons of profiles, some of which prefer less traffic, etc. In the end it's just a cost factor. I suspect one problem is that it's not possible to assign costs to things that are just in the vicinity vs. the actual track though.

@scy @JackMcCrack Yeah, though I kind of find it hard to come up with a sensible use case for this kind of parsing anyway? Like, I'm fine with defaults for smaller, unspecified units (e.g. providing a full day, an hour, and a minute, but no second), but when would the other way make sense (e.g., parsing a minute and second, but no hour and no day). IMO this should just not be supported (aka throw an exception) anyway.

I used to use Pocket to read online articles on my eBook reader, but the current version of the app unhelpfully removed the page flipping mode (not recently, probably one or two years ago). Only normal scrolling is left, which is super annoying with an ePaper display. Is there any alternative?

mcc, (edited ) to random
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

I have acquired a Device. The device arrived with a PSU in the form of an AC adapter on some Europe standard plus a sleek but baffling LeMarchand's Box of a travel power adapter. I can't figure out how to use the travel adapter with the PSU on Canadian power. As you can see if I plug it in dead on it does not accept it, but if I plug it in "sideways" it does. But then it doesn't seem to deliver power. Is anyone familiar with such adapters? What am I missing?

EDIT: It wanted me to push real hard

__michaelg,
@__michaelg@chaos.social avatar

@mcc Dead on is the right way. Use the (more) force and/or wiggle it a bit when pushing. Usually these shutters only move away when roughly the same force is applied to both side, i.e., you have to plug it in something symmetrically.

__michaelg,
@__michaelg@chaos.social avatar

@mcc @moira That's unlikely an issue. The black power brick is very likely a switching power supply and equally likely accepts anything from 100V to 240V. Probably also says so somewhere on the thing.

pallenberg, to tesla
@pallenberg@mastodon.social avatar

So the #Tesla Head of Design, Franz von Holzhausen, was seen driving a matte black Cybertruck in Santa Monica.

The age of "fake it until you make it" is so over! We officially have entered the era of "Just fake it!"

Just a bad hood seam, which is almost refreshing in that at least it's a relatively even bad seam. It's just way wider than it should be, which in fairness is actually one of Tesla's signature brand looks. It's actually pretty rare to see a Tesla whose hood doesn't have some kind of fitment issues, but here it's more obvious because of those uncompromisingly straight lines. At least the matte wrap helps with most of the oilcanning and other surfacing issues, at least until it gets covered in bird shit and other unwashable detritus, at which point it will go back to looking as crap as every other Cybertruck.
Just a comically bad fit on the rear taillights of the Cybertruck, so extreme is the mismatch that it almost looks like it was done on purpose, except that it obviously wasn't. Tolerances are measured in centimeters here, not millimeters (let alone microns). Note also the thin, isolated side panel on the right, looking like it wants to cut you. Vehicles aren't supposed to look like that!
A wheel arch leans out from the vast expanse of of the Cybertruck's entirely flat bed flank panels, creating a cave at one corner, whose dark expanse lures the eye in. From here it looks like the widest entrance point could fit a child's fingers, just to pick a random example, although the unevenness of the seam suggests that said child's fingers would then quickly become stuck. More to the point, it just looks cheap and shitty for a Fisher Price toy, let alone a six figure truck.

So, there is this hilarious bug in macOS' new gesture-driven video effects. Some USB cameras can be mounted upside-down and have a setting so that the image gets rotated in software; I think this is just a flag somewhere in USB UVC. This also works fine everywhere. However, the gesture recognition apparently runs before that rotation happens, so it sees everything upside-down. So when a coworker makes the thumbs-up gesture, they actually get the thumbs-down video effect 😂
