@ada@blahaj.zone

I'm an Australian woman, based in Meanjin / Brisbane, but in love with Argentina. In a previous life, I was a Trans activist, runner, and RollerDerby player. Now that we are all "post" covid, I feel like I'm still somehow finding my feet, and working out what I want to keep from my old life, and what I want to add to it! I have the feeling I will never get a final answer :)

I'm co-admin blahaj.zone and lemmy.blahaj.zone.

My photography can be found at @ada https://pixelfed.au/i/portfolio/Ada

I can also be found on matrix at ada:chat.blahaj.zone

@rysiek @alberto_cottica @edgeryders Last I saw, this was going to be a one way federation, with AP content getting pulled in to Discourse, but not the other way around.

That was based on a discussion I saw on lemmy several months ago though. I'm not sure if it's still accurate

discord has ruined the definition of the word "server" for potentially an entire generation of people

ada,

@esm Unlike the fediverse, for instance :P

@kainoa I would add...

Friendica

Search - 2
Quote posts - 1
Post Edits - 1
Threads - 2
Roles - 1
Groups - 2

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa As far as downsides, it doesn't handle image captions, the way it does media in general is painful, and its moderation functionality isn't good enough.

As a platform, it simultaneously feels mature and dated

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa Here's an example of a relatively heavily threaded comment tree

What's interesting though is that whole comment tree is treated as a single unit in your home timeline, so when a reply happens, you see the whole tree object in your timeline. It's collapsed by default, but can be expanded. And it is only at one place in your timeline at any given time, so if multiple people are replying to different chains, or there is an ongoing conversation, you only see it once as that tree object, rather than having a heap of individual replies scattered in your timeline

@kainoa Friendica's threads are better than Calckey's. Not as pretty, but incredibly functional. It uses a post/reply concept, so every time you see a reply to something, you get the full context of it, with the whole discussion available to you. It also groups them, so you don't get repetition of posts and replies in your timeline.

Group wise, they have gup.pe like functionality built in out of the box. It also handles groups via lemmy, gup.pe in a specialist interface, threads the conversations etc. Better than Calckey does

Search wise, it's as good as Calckey's.

Roles are different to Misskey's, but basically, when you sign up, you can create a regular account, a group or a an "announcement" account (think like a facebook page). You can also link them and swap between them really easily.

However, it has an awful UI, and because it's not built on ActivityPub from the ground up, some of the functionality is a bit "weird"

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa I wouldn't say limited. It's not designed with AP in mind, but aside from media and captions, it is fully functional. It even handles subject/summaries as distinct from content warnings, which is very uncommon.

Ultimately, it's a microblogging platform comparable with the others on the list.

However, it might be an idea to try it before adding it.

But I tell you, if timelines and groups in Calckey worked like they did in Friendica, I'd be so over the moon.

Next in my explorations: what the heck are 'clips'?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@bloodwrites Clips are saved posts. Similar to bookmarks, but you can sort them in to different clip lists, and can share them with others

fluffery, to random

how do you use calckey in mobile? webapp or not

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@fluffery The PWA is too feature rich for me to consider using a 3rd party app

maikelthedev, to random

Right so by having an antenna with the content of the local timelines of Fosstodon and Hachyderm I have a window into the Engineering world.

Now....what other worlds do I want to have a window into...? Is there such thing as a fitness or sports instance?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@maikelthedev @jcrabapple @supakaity

@jo, you can help with this. I don't have an account on calckey.social. Is this feature available there? I was sure that it had been PR'd in to the main branch, but maybe I'm wrong?

ZoDoneRightNow, to random

is there a way to change how much of a post is shown by default (so that I don't have to click show more on so many posts)?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@RiversideBryan @ZoDoneRightNow That's a blahaj.zone only feature at the moment! It hasn't been PR'd back in to the main Calckey branch

Ok trans fediverse! I need your help!

I'm a straight trans woman, and my timeline is largely sapphic! It's time to even the balance a bit!

So if you've got any queer/trans content that my straight but queer ass might enjoy, please spam me with it! Memes, people/hashtags to follow, stories, I don't care what it is, I'll take it all :)

The more I use different apps, the more I feel that we are on the edge of a different future, in the early stages of something that we haven't seen before.

In the last few months, I've used , , , , , , and . Soon, I'm going to try an install of . In the not too distant future, we will see bringing more options for video chat to the Fediverse. There are countless more platforms that I haven't had a chance to try.

The network formed by the interconnections between those apps is the Fediverse; a Federated Universe. Federated, because everything out there is connected with everything else, in one giant network. What I am truly beginning to appreciate is just how real that vision is, and just how disruptive to our future it's going to be. More than a truism, these the fediverse platforms really will allow us to see and interact with nearly anything else out there.

The platform we use no longer determines the information we can access; it doesn't build walls around us. Instead, what out choice of platform determines, is how we interact with information, rather than determining what information we are able interact with in the first place. The walls in the walled garden haven't so much been torn down, as simply never built.

I can write a blog post, and someone on Mastodon can reply to it. I can make a group post on lemmy, and someone from Calckey can reply to it. I can see an awesome photo on Pixelfed, bring it in to and boost it for everyone else to see. And then anyone who sees it can interact with it.

The cross platform interactions are still imperfect. Standards are still being developed, code is still being written and features are still being defined, but the future is right here, we are on the cusp of something new and amazing.

Of course, this is all old news to someone who has been part of the fediverse for years now, but it feels different now. The momentum is here, we are seeing a shift and I think once we cross that precipice, once we have normalised the cross channel interactions we are starting to develop, it's going to be very hard to go back.

Honestly, I can't wait.

I'm Ada, a trans woman from Meanjin / Brisbane Australia. I have a teenage NonBinary kiddo who is not technically a kid anymore, and a tuxedo cat! I'm in a poly relationship with @supakaity and @internutter .

Before covid, I was a trans activist, runner, RollerDerby player and an unstoppable extrovert. These days, I'm still an out and proud activist, but I've left Derby behind, and I have an on again off again relationship with running.

I'm an avid bird lover, and photography lover. My photos are mostly of birds, but I occasionally spread my wings and photograph non feathered things :)

I'm in love with Argentina and Buenos Aires, and am trying to work out how I can shift my life to move there, assuming Milei doesn't make that impossible.

Blahaj.zone, my main instance, is a labour of love by @supakaity and myself, and we're open for registration. So if you're a friend of blahaj, come and join us :)

We also have a lemmy instance, and you can find me there at @ada
