Something that has always had a bit of a nagging feeling to me where open source is concerned, the all or nothing situation it demands.

There's a lack of some control over a project you start and created from scratch and "open sourced" I'm anti- open source in this regard. When I make stuff I make it with passion and I never want someone to come along and fork it as long as the project is being maintained by me and available to all to use, it is MINE, not yours - But what I do believe in is that software SHOULD be free to most people, and those who can afford it should share in the wealth.

I think my desire would be something like a source-available license that defaults to a very liberal open source license (MIT/BSD) upon death or say 5 years. OR it is the source available license and can never be any other license after that, if it is ever licensed in a way outside of the initial terms of the source available, or a MIT/BSD or (whatever the choice is) - the entire tree defaults to MIT/BSD

Effectively let me build my toy in my own way while sharing it with everyone else who wants to contribute, allow me to own it and be proud of it, allow me to nurture my creation allow me the privilege of selling it without the worry that some fork might take all the effort I put into it. And then let everyone have at it!

I think the and federations pose interesting questions about what platforms can and should be.

Do we actually want blogs and feeds of blogs folded into a mastodon/microblog social feed?

Do we want to read and comment on blogs on mastodon?

Do we want all the diversity of the fediverse fed into a single platform's UI and hope that it works well?

Are we worried that some choices by our platform or instance admin might hinder this process?

I'm rather skeptical.

aliceif,

@mima @maegul separating FE from BE sounds nice in theory but in practice, seeing how pleroma has been doing, the reality is not that nice :/

the practice many browsers have adopted of truncating URLs in the address bar to the hostname is emblematic of the decline and commercially driven infantilization of the web.

understanding URLs — their roles and the ways and whys of how they are constructed — was an elementary skill of the original view-source web.

hiding complete URLs encourages people to become ignorant consumers of mysterious information services, rather than informed participants in a public forum.

aliceif,

@kura @interfluidity Edge too does this type of highlight/shadow, idk what the "many" browsers are that OP refers to?

aliceif,

@kura @interfluidity in fact Edge does it better because it highlights the whole domain and doesn't shadow out the subdomain

aliceif,

@interfluidity @kura oh you're talking about mobile, okay.
I don't have much need nor want to use a web browser for actually browsing the web at large on there, so I was not aware of that being a thing there, where Edge too does seem to cut the URL while not focused.

Protip:

blocks CW'd images if you're logged out now, but if you follow someone from Mastodon (or a misskey instance probably) you can just view it normally.

If you need to share a link, a mastodon link of the misskey link works, funny enough. IDK why they're doing that, stupid. Twitter-esque, even.

aliceif,

@SirTapTap doesn't do it on my server and that uses the current version of misskey - where did that happen to you, out of curiosity?

Unsure which Linux distribution to use? I 100% agree with this article by @Mastodon:

https://www.unsungnovelty.org/posts/01/2024/a-linux-distro-recommendation-framework-and-my-picks-for-2024/

tl;dr: Either Arch Linux or Linux Mint.

aliceif,

@fell @unsungnovelty that article is a waste of electrons for this alone in the honorable mentions

Misskey/Sharkey/*key admins, what, if any roles have you configured on your instances?

#misskey #sharkey #fediAdmin

aliceif,

@ada
verified role for every person - that enables searching
mod role - not in use since this ended up being single user
role for bots - to loosen the rate limit for some API calls

Dear Lazyweb, "git pull" (or ssh) keeps crapping out while trying to download a very large update from a remote repo. Is there some file I can generate and then rsync, since rsync knows how to resume a failed download and git apparently does not?

client_loop: send disconnect: Broken pipe7 GiB | 2.58 MiB/s
fetch-pack: unexpected disconnect while reading sideband packet
fatal: early EOF

aliceif,

@jwz you can create a "git bundle" (same name as the command) which is the entire repository as a file that you can then attach to your local working copy as a remote and pull from

This is how the commands should look like

# navigate to a complete copy of the repository
git bundle create /path/to/myrepo.bundle --branches --tags
# transfer to your machine that has unrealiable network
git remote add mybundle /path/to/myrepo.bundle
git fetch mybundle
git merge mybundle/branchname
aliceif, to random

isn't it crazy that arbitrary names everyone can just pick and use are somehow able to not cause incredibly constant breakage in computing?

Nothing prevents me from making a program named, say, hexchat, but were I to set up a package for it and install it to /usr/bin/hexchat i would ruin some peoples' days

how can we just ... live like this?

Note I am not shilling for Java/Android style reverse domain name names like one.x27.mycoolprogram since DNS entries are less permanent than software imo.

Also terrifying field of "this should not work and has so much potential for collision pain": Port numbers!

Also terrifying: Temp files!

PSA for all Misskey admins:
Yesterday's 2024.3.0 update makes it impossible to react on Firefox for iOS because the reaction picker doesn't show (the UI still darkens though).
This does not happen with Safari on iOS and also not on Misskey 2024.2.0 so it seems to be a bug specifically in that combination.

I've recently sent a post with 26,000+ characters. The delivery report tells me that every last *key instance had problems with it.

They often rejected it entirely with an error 413. (delivery rejected: 413 {"statusCode":413,"code":"FST_ERR_CTP_BODY_TOO_LARGE","error":"Payload Too Large","message":"Re)

This means that Misskey and the Forkeys have a hard limit not at 50,000 characters as I previously thought, but at 25,000 characters, 20,000 characters or even lower, and they refuse to accept any incoming objects that are longer. I mean, I know that Mastodon has a 100,000-character limit that acts the same, and I think I've read that so have Pleroma and Akkoma, but that limit has to be ridiculously low. Essentially, I can barely send virtual world pictures with sufficient image descriptions out to Misskey and the Forkeys.

Of course, this stays largely unnoticed because there are only so many users in the Fediverse who a) write posts that grow that long and b) have access to delivery reports for their own posts. Another advantage of being on Hubzilla.
