A ban on having exotic animals as pet would actually be the best to honour these 'magnificent' animals.

I don't think the owner was necessarily bad. However, if you are a pet owner, of any animal, not just exotic ones, the least you can do if you go away for holidays is having someone coming to check for your pets.

We built these universities from tents. And from tents, with the support of our friends, we will rebuild them once again."

Streaming now from Goldsmith, Dana Erekat (CEO of whyze) & Eyal Weizman (Forensic Architecture) open a symposium on the role of architecture and planning in colonialism (focused on Palestine, but it's a broader discussion architects refuse to have)

In the meantime a material scientist that I really admired is hosting a Rio Tinto-sponsored podcast about 'sustainable materials' (not linking because I don't want to promote it). If you wonder how happens and why sometimes people don't trust experts.

There is a level of discomfort and cognitive dissonance that keeps growing in me working in HE while scholasticide and ecocide (yes, they are part of the genocide or ethnic cleansing) committed in Gaza for more than half a year, and the deafening silence of Western universities completely ignoring it.
I truly believed that if there is any place in the world when dialogue should and must always be a priority, is in academic fora. Dialogue is the foundation of

Buona liberazione e buona resistenza a tutti e tutte!

It’s end of March here in South Devon, UK. Spring break is starting in around 36 hours. It’s snowing and the Met Office website is in total denial because it keeps saying it is raining

Frans De Waal was enlightening in many ways, but I think the concept that will stuck forever with me is his criticism of the general attitude of comparing humans to chimps, using them as an evolutionary explanation for our violent hierarchical social structure. De Waal stressed how we share the same amount of genes with Bonobos, 'The Forgotten Ape', and there's no evolutionary reason why we couldn't have been more Bonobos, instead of Chimps: a 'make-love-not-war' ape. Imagine that.

“ “Never again” must mean never again by anyone, against anyone. If this call is not applied to Palestinians, there can never realistically be any hope that others will apply it to Jews – especially in an era in which so much anti-Semitism goes ignored because it does not fit into the pro-Israel/pro-Palestine dichotomy.”

Just went to watch 2. As we rooted for the Fremen’s liberation, I couldn’t stop thinking that in real life, people who fight against the empire and the colonial rule, are generally called terrorists.

“ Many of the protesters who fill the streets of their cities week after week have no immediate relation to the European past of the Shoah. They judge Israel by its actions in Gaza rather than its Shoah-sanctified demand for total and permanent security. Whether or not they know about the Shoah, they reject the crude social-Darwinist lesson Israel draws from it – the survival of one group of people at the expense of another.”

Reading the news is unbearable and depressing. Better to read some sci-fi classic about a people oppressed by an empire who extracts all it can from the people’s native land and portrays them as ignorant primitive terrorists when they fight back.

I really can’t figure out how authors could envisioning such a world
