I’m 750 miles from home and discovered that my fellow hotel lobby dweller is from the same area. He did not want to chit-chat at all and while I respect that, I suspect my favorite tshirt may be a factor

Looks like we don't need laws after all for platforms to opportunistically suppress political user content: In 🇫🇷 , a admitted in a parliamentary hearing that the company was "proud" to have collaborated "hand in hand with the interior ministry" to make sure only user content critical of the mass protests was shown on .

Never forget that a billionaire, statistically speaking, has more in common with other billionaires than anyone else in the world.

It’s about as exclusive as exclusive clubs go.

A billionaire is a billionaire first and foremost and then whatever else they may be.

What I’m trying to say is, no billionaire is your friend.

I vowed off several years ago. With the exception of one journey to immediate family that isn't possible by train and ferry on an ordinary budget (time and money). I was just wondering if there's a word for this, for someone who pledged not to fly, except when it's unavoidable, and realised there is. The word is 'hypocrite'.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@CiaraNi Please don’t be so hard on yourself. Goodness knows the folks who own or otherwise benefit financially from the literal handful of corporations that are responsible for ~70% of greenhouse emissions aren’t beating themselves up about it and neither are the billionaires in their private jets and they’re the ones actually responsible for climate change.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@CiaraNi No but they’re more than happy to point the finger at folks with empathy like yourself in hopes that in your introspection you won’t notice who the real culprits are.

I’m sad to see that Evernote is laying off its entire US staff and “moving its operations to Italy, home of its parent company Bending Spoons.”

Bending Spoons says they’re going to continue development on Evernote, but even so, if you (like me) use Evernote, this might be a good time to (a) export your data (as a backup, if nothing else), and (b) look around at what other notetaking apps are available and whether any of them suit your needs.

@elysdir Them moving to Europe actually makes me more likely that I’ll use their app given the stronger privacy protections and regulatory environment we have here.

I don't quite understand why some people have reservations about using the mobile web or Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). The web has its advantages: you don't need to install anything, it's compatible with different devices, and often requires fewer resources compared to dedicated apps. Most importantly, it offers freedom from being tied to a specific operating system.

However, despite these benefits, there is still a persistent demand for dedicated mobile apps, even for things that don't necessarily need them. Take news, for example. Why bother with a dedicated news app when you can easily read articles on the web?

Now, I understand some people may argue that the web has too many ads. But let's be realistic, how long do you think those "free" news reading apps will remain ad-free? Probably only until the powers-that-be convince you to switch to their dedicated mobile apps. It's like a classic "bait and switch" situation.

So, what can we do about poorly designed websites? Well, the solution isn't to abandon the web altogether. It's about being selective with the websites we use. I agree that the mobile web versions of platforms like Twitter, Reddit, CNN, and others can be subpar, but that's intentional. They want to entice you into installing their dedicated mobile apps. My suggestion? Don't fall for it.

Stick with the web. It's the only truly platform-agnostic option out there that won't keep you confined to a restricted environment.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@joelving @atomicpoet Afaik nothing has changed. I seem to remember me and maybe half a handful of other people making some noise about it but folks seemed mostly fine with it.

I basically altered the design of the Small Web based on that so it wouldn’t be at the mercy of the whims of browser makers (at least insofar as they’d have to break existing core mainstream Big Web functionality if they wanted to break it).

feoh, to accessibility

Partially blind guy here with an #a11y PSA:

I'm seing a trend away from "Text Size" sliders or old fashioned font dialogs and towards a few set choices "Default", "Large","Larger", etc.

This is a HUGE step backwards. Your 'larger' is never large enough for my crazy busted eyeballs when I'm using my 34" monitor.

If you must do this, please be sure to add "Largest" and even "ZOMG ARE YOU SERIOUS LARGE" options. Some of us REALLY need them, even if it seems insane to you.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@feoh @EMFaulds Thank you, this is very good to know. I’ll make sure to keep it in mind in my own work.
