Have you ever been so in your own head that when you start talking about what you've been thinking about, it doesn't make sense to other people, because they haven't been down your mental rabbit hole for hours?

atomicbirdseed,

@RickiTarr I became wise enough to realise when I'm in a position to either sound completely insane, or like an a-hole. I learned to give an abridged version of my thought train before blurting out something of typically inconsequential import. Verbalising it brings the added benefit of hearing it, which is another fantastic device to discover one's own moments of idiocy before making a fool of oneself.

The pinnacle of "return-to-office" ("RTO") stupidity is requiring people to be in the office some number of days per week, with first-come-first-served hot-desking.¹ Leads to people ostensibly in the office "for improved collaboration" now sitting at desks spread all over the office space, and then using their remote collaboration tools from the office. Including video calls.

Managers implementing this sort of policy deserve a metaphorical bucket of ice water dumped over their heads.

atomicbirdseed,

@xahteiwi our CIO and friends tried calling it RTW: Return to Work, until I pointed out in an all hands that we are already working.

@MacPherson if $190K is not a lot, everyone needs a massive, economy destroying, pay rise.

Okay, so I showed the "Pianogate" video to my Chinese wife, and she has a perspective that I hadn't even considered.

She thinks that Dr. K is a big colossal asshole for not agreeing to the Chinese groups' request to not be filmed.

"But what about the UK's right to film in public?" I asked her.

And she told me, "Okay, yeah, you have that right. But there's a reason these folks probably don't want to be filmed and that's because they don't want to be seen outside China. Whatever they do outside China affects their families in China. If the Chinese government perceives you as screwing up abroad, they will also hold that screw up over your family."

"But these people probably work for the CCP," I told her.

"Yeah," she said, "But that's all the more reason for them to be concerned about being filmed. You think people back in China want to see the CCP living it up in the UK? And CCP people have families too -- their families have nothing to do with this, but they're the ones who will be penalized for this viral video."

Then my wife looked at me with a very serious expression, and she said, "Look, this white guy is clearly just antagonizing the Chinese for views. He thinks it's a big laugh. But while he's laughing and getting his views, who are the ones getting hurt? He never thought about the actual consequences to families, did he?"

"They're already talking about this on WeChat and Weibo," I told her.

"Well," she stated, "Then I expect the worst."

atomicbirdseed,

@atomicpoet this approach risks acceptance of Han Chinese authoritarianism abroad.

Not to say a bit of compassion for people isn’t warranted, just saying be mindful.

Another image widely shared by pro Israeli bots and accounts on #Twitter and #Instagram

This is so ridiculous that proves that almost everyone sharing this have never talked to a Muslim or seen a Muslim pray or even asked a Muslim about it before sharing it.

Wearing shoes and glasses when praying is just so ridiculously stupid that only an idiot would believe its authentic.

But sadly our world is full of idiots.

atomicbirdseed,

@faab64 @palestine @crashglasshouses @faab64 Israel wants to normalise Muslim citizenship in Israel? What’s the problem them? Annex the West Bank, open the borders to the West Bank and Gaza, take everyone into the fold, declare single state, and loose Jewish homogeneity. No problem.

Cyclone Kirrily has officially been declared a Category 1 cyclone and named Kirrily. Slowly moving towards Townsville and a cyclone warning is in effect.

Still no sign of Blossom, Bubbles, or Buttercup.

atomicbirdseed,

@dgar I must be missing a reference here… was Kirrily the name of Mojo Jojo’s hat or something?

Traveling from the US to a jurisdiction with real privacy laws is instructive. Visiting some of the same web sites I always visit, after clicking through a “manage cookies" banner from one (US) web site I saw this. Folks, I’m more than casually knowledgeable about privacy; it's one of my research areas and I write about it, and even I was shocked at the number of (I assume potential) partners in this pop-up, to say nothing of the cookie types that couldn't be disabled.

Ensure security, prevent and detect fraud, fix errors — 106 partners Deliver and present advertising and content — 92 partners Match and combine data from other sources — 88 partners Link different devices — 87 partners Identify devices based on information transmitted automatically — 98 partners All of these are “always active” and not disablable

atomicbirdseed,

@SteveBellovin use Firefox Focus, accept everything, and don’t worry about it.

"Trump’s violation of 14th Amendment couldn’t be any clearer"

  • Former federal judge

A day of reckoning awaits Trump.

Unfortunately, it's with his hand-picked conservative Supreme Court judges.

atomicbirdseed,

@Free_Press My read of the US Supreme Court is they vote along lines of what they want to have happen, then justify it afterwards.
