@anathema_device This is so sad, but also the right thing to do. When I saw that“Rabbit Test” had won, I was delighted! 2023 may very well be the end of the Hugo Awards. Without a massive fix of the kind that Worldcon has refused over and over to undertake, I don’t see how they’ll continue to be accepted as having any value.

@BlackAzizAnansi I used to actually like to read about conspiracy theories, because I thought they were funny, but it's hard to laugh when I'm watching them get weaponized into easy access to power. Even the Flat Earthers have to be taken seriously, because they often believe in other, more dangerous crap, and end up shooting up a pizza parlor or voting for Trump or convincing people not to get vaccinated.

Recent studies have shown that keeping up with vaccinations has a dramatic effect on reducing the likelihood of developing Long Covid. And we've known for years that resting--really, really resting, mind and body--reduces the chances of getting Long Covid. (Also, despite what some people say, masking--especially in public indoor places--dramatically reduces the chances of catching Covid in the first place.)

Junko took this video of Pomme wagging her tail in her sleep. To us, this is SO GOOD. It’s the first time we’ve seen her wag her tail in the 2 1/2 years since she joined us. She only barks in her sleep—apparently she wags her tail in her sleep too, sometimes. She is a rescued breeder, lived in a cage for 6 years, and it’s left a lot of trauma. She’s slowly overcoming it.

@evacide This is why I mourn that Texas has taken away my ability to vote in local elections. Since I became a Permanent Resident of Japan, Texas now only lets me vote for president, senator, and congressperson. Nothing below federal level. I used to study up and vote on schoolboards, local bond issues, everything. It hurts that I can’t now.

That seems misleading—there is no reduced infection risk. The state of emergency is over, not because the pandemic ended, but because the powers that be decided they just couldn’t keep it up.

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 In my own experience in Fukuoka, masking in indoor public places is still quite common, falling in hot months, though. Among my uni students, it’s fallen to about 20% masking indoor. Teachers mask somewhat less than 50%. I try to remind students that masking helps prevent the spread of Covid and other diseases, and while I’m not allowed to tell them they must mask, I do demand they follow “coughing etiquette.”

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 The funny thing is how bad most of my students are at handwashing. I use the men's restroom near the classrooms sometimes. I'd say less than 5% of them use soap, ever. Many just put their fingertips under running water for one second, to give any life forms on their skin a refreshing drink. And while there are four sinks, only one has a soap dispenser. Guess which sink every student who is styling their hair stands in front of, while I'm waiting for the soap.

  2. The DeadBirdSite (DBS). Symbol: a bird with Xs for eyes.
  3. Xitter. In some languages, X is pronounced similar to "sh."

But I get the feeling that Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell was so exhausting for her, she needed to do something very different, something short and tight as opposed to massive and flowing in every direction. (And I think the pressure to write a sequel to JS&MN must have been weighing on her, too.)
