@stoneymonster Me: What make of car did Don McLean drive to the levee, but the levee was dry?

Chevrolet of Watsonville Chat Team:
Ah, that's a classic line from the song "American Pie" by Don McLean. Unfortunately, I don't have information about the specific make of car mentioned in the song….

the last of today's nerd dump: look at this incredible illustration of the complexity involved in sending photos via cable across the Atlantic in 1926! I believe this is an illustration of the Bartlane Cable Picture Transmission System which translated images into variations of five-hole punches onto Baudot telegraphic tape and then transmitted, reversing the process at the other end using a teletype machine.

@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@loriemerson That’s interesting how they used multiple prints with different exposures to digitize the brightness levels. This newsreel from 1937 about sending photos over wire domestically (not across the Atlantic) shows a simpler, more analog process: https://youtu.be/cLUD_NGE370

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@mcc One time, I tried shooting photos with Velvia 50 slide film but didn't get around to developing the film for about 11 years, and when I finally did, it turned out that I had taken the pictures on Mars.

You can use mustard instead of mayo in tuna salad and you can use mayo instead of butter on grilled cheese, so can you use mustard instead of mayo instead of butter on grilled cheese?

Thinking about how the palindromic number in “99 Luftballons” by Nena sidesteps the difference in order when spelling out numbers as words in English and German.

Would this song have been as much of a worldwide hit if it used a non-palindromic number like 95? „Fünfundneunzig Luftballons“ vs. “Ninety-Five Red Balloons”?

Apparently only the German version of the song made the charts in the US, so maybe it wouldn’t have mattered.

@SnoopJ I remember enjoying the GBA Castlevanias, then not finishing Portrait of Ruin. I don’t really remember Dawn of Sorrow, but I strongly disliked the 3D Castlevania for the PS2, so I guess Castlevania DS was ok?

Symphony of the Night is the one I keep going back to. I have the PS4 Castlevania collection that includes everything up to SotN, and the older ones (pre leveling) are pretty difficult for me 😅

They will make cemeteries their cathedrals and the cities will be your tombs? This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.

I feel like this movie doesn’t really capitalize on the inherent horror potential of elevators, but to be fair it predates Poltergeist III (let alone Final Destination)
