Um, I'd love an explanation. Anyone know what exactly this early-20th-century postcard of New Brunswick was trying to communicate?

I'm not a scholar of , so I'll refrain from commenting on the specifics of the failed constitutional referendum there. As a historian of , however, I will point out that here, at least, what we call might just as effectively be called democratic . Over the past few centuries, the electorate - by no means everyone who lives in the country - has repeatedly and overwhelmingly favoured Indigenous dispossession while opposing Indigenous empowerment.

My university is only a few years out from its 200th anniversary*. Between now and then, I suppose I should try to publish the research I've been doing in my "downtime" on the history of some of its shady land deals, eh?

*The 200th anniversary of its charter (an old date! Just what the marketing people like to celebrate). The institution didn't actually enrol its first university-level student for another 15 years (1842).

Historical question! Does anyone know when institutions in the English-speaking world - corporations, government departments, etc - began opening bank accounts in their own names rather than entrusting funds to individual officeholders (who often mixed public and private funds in personal accounts)? I'm currently looking at 1830s-40s Canada where, if I'm understanding the admittedly sparse material correctly, this shift had not yet occurred. @histodons @econhist

She takes a while to get there, but in the closing paragraph of the last chapter of her ambitious and deeply erudite "Civilization: From Enlightenment Philosophy to Canadian History," Elsbeth Heaman makes a pithy and, in my view, wholly convincing argument that in #Canada (and, I would say, in many other places) we need more #history. #histodons #CdnHist @histodons

I voted for someone (who actually won!) who is working hard to raise my property taxes (by more than 10%!) and it feels great! Hearing my generally awful city councillor whining about it on the local news yesterday was icing on the cake.

Who knew that has a by-law that "limits idling to no more than one minute in a 60-minute period?" It's news to me, as I'm sure it would be to thousands of drivers who like to idle the day away.

People get so upset about pineapple on #pizza. Whatever your take, Hawaiian pizza is a perfect expression of postwar #Canada - produced by migration, consumer society, and new foodways, esp. the rise of restaurants and the turn towards the "exotic" in suburban kitchens. Pizza was virtually unknown in the country prior to the late 1940s.

Check out the pizza Mrs. Brady made for the CBC in 1957 (and how she prononces "pizzeria") for an idea: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1402818181 #histodons #history

We're in Rimouski, a city that's more or less guaranteed to be covered by a thick blanket of snow from December through March. Not only is there no snow on the ground, but all the outdoor skating rinks are closed too.

  1. "Why do they call it Blues Fest? This is rock and before they were playing jazz."
  2. "Did most people come for everything but the music?"

It'd be impossible to come up with any sort of definitive list, especially a short one, of great songs in which Steve Albini was involved. But below are a few, in no particular order that have long appealed to me.

  1. The Jesus Lizard, "Then Comes Dudley" (1991)

It's only the third week of term and I'm already exhausted. So I decided to resist the impetus to produce for the glory of the university, science, humanity and myself and to make homemade pasta on a Tuesday night instead. It was worth it. Now, on to the dishes.

One of the things that in a city that was absolutely not designed to make it safe that I've come to appreciate is the way it's led me to find alternate routes. My standard commute leads me through sleepy streets and gorgeous ravines. It feels like being invited into a semi-secret city that most, if aware of it at all, certainly don't get to experience on a daily basis.

Curious about #university #divestment movements, I poked around student newspaper archives today. While some discussion of South Africa took place at the U. of #Toronto earlier, 1983 looks like the moment when it took off. However, this relatively well-known case wasn't the first to garner attention at UofT and other Canadian universities (notably U. of Winnipeg). That honour seems to go to Noranda, a mining company heavily involved in Pinochet's Chile. #BDS #histodons 1/
