Polyhymnia, to sewing

It's a shirt!
Still to do: finish off the side seams (they've been sewn, need felling), add the cuffs, buttons and buttonholes. @sewing

@Polyhymnia @sewing That’s a beauty!

@kamikat @sewing I don't know if it would help, but I've found making Pinterest boards better help than looking at other sewers. Okay, I then have to try to find a pattern that works with whatever's inspiring me - be that Edwardian corset covers, 1930s beach pyjamas, Stevie Nicks or 18th century men's coats - but it is a nice way to start, by detaching completely from the commercial and the on-trend.

(NB: I don't mind looking like an idiot, YMMV.)

crinolinerobot,

@kamikat @sewing So make a pinterest board with trendy stuff! Those were just my things that I've been pinning.

My latest project is complete - a casual summer shirt for my husband. He bought a guayabera in Cuba about 25 years ago and loved it, but eventually it wore out. This comes pretty close in style and feel. The pattern is McCall’s 8263 (with a pair of extra pockets, to match that bygone guayabera) and the fabric Robert Kaufmann Manchester cotton.

Americans, starting my UK-US cultural exchange programme today, I give you these words:

MITHER - to moan or irritatingly wank on about something ex: "Stop your mithering, you knob."

GLEG - to have a look at / look at. ex: "Ey up, gi'us a gleg at your new Action Man. GI'US!"

CHUNTER - to ramble on somewhat, to have an amiable chat.

Thank you.

In return, we'll take another 43 TV shows about brave coppers who are definitely not all racist scumbags. We love your fantasy television.

@Jyoti @MortenBay @smellsofbikes Which bit of India? My great-grandma was from Kolkata.

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti My family’s longterm mixed - AngloIndian, tho the term’s often misused - and AngloBurmese. My granddad came to Britain in the 1930s.

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti I can manage a small amount of very crap Burmese but no Indian languages (granddad spoke Hindustani but never passed it on.)

Just got proper told off by a Yank for using the word 'cunt' as an affectionate term.

Americans really need to check their cultural imperialism.

Fucking hell.

@Jyoti You daft cunt!

In my culture (en_GB) this reads as heavy sarcasm.

But in theirs (en_INT?) I suspect it was heavily focus-grouped and found to be perceived as sincere.

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Edent If I got that from another Brit, I'd expect them to be sticking pins in a customer-shaped doll if I got a reply like that...

Something a little different for today.

I spent my weekend practicing vintage textures, shading, and halftones. The result: this robot.

I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, what do you think?

I'm working on a new song for a comp and as the lyrics came together, I realised that in the 41 years I've been writing songs, 90% of them have been me questioning why I feel things that "normal" people don't.

At what stage do those of us who are different just accept our differences and stop holding ourselves to impossible metrics?

Me, idgaf. I learnt by the age of seven to ignore orthodoxy. You had to as an Indian kid in '70s Britain.

I hope kids now have it easier.

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti Eeeeh well it's taken me till nearly 50 - lockdown made me realise how many bits of myself I'd carved away over the years to make a square peg fit into a round hole. I'm now trying to reattach them all!

Stinky meat plant is flowering! We’ve had some rain today which seems to have brought it out. I’m not sure what it’s really called, but it smells of rotting flesh so it grows at the very end of the garden.

Quite proud of this shot… The flower is a Dutch iris, ‘Bronze Perfection’, bought from JParkers. I expected the Dutch iris to come out when the reticulated ones did, so put it down to the hard winter when none flowered in March. Husband and I were delighted when they flowered recently!

Very pleased to announce what I was working towards... I've started Fine City Social, a new instance running on for people in and , ! Please do feel free to recommend to anyone in the area or with a connection, the more the merrier!

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti @Bloonface I grew up in a rural bit south of the city, and while I love the city, I’d never move back to the countryside. Too much family there 😅

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti @Bloonface Attleborough. Still got family across Breckland, brother lives north of Norwich.

I’ve lived in the west country long enough that my accent’s become a weird mishmash, like Generic Yokel 😅

Gah. Rehearsing pointless arguments in your head, leaving you jangled and depressed, is a rubbish way to spend a Monday morning.

Not enough sleep + need a long walk, like as not.

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@JuliaRez A good walk is often a very good plan. Bit of natural light in the eyes, green things, interesting sounds...

(Thank you for the ART by the way. I may have to respond with some CRAFT because I'm no artist but am not a bad artisan.)

crinolinerobot,

@JuliaRez I've resorted to my Halloween playlist. And might have to make cake in my lunch break. It's Monday lunchtime and I'm already done with this week 😂

On , it takes NINE CLICKS to block a spammer.

Doesn't seem than much but times that by twenty spammers or so every time I upload some clubbing pics.

NINE FUCKING CLICKS.

It could be one, with a dropdown option including 'Spammer.'

Who is doing their UI, jfc.

crinolinerobot,

@simon_greenwood @Jyoti Yeah, I think they're more concerned with whether big business thinks it's worth paying for engagement than whether the user has an enjoyable experience.

So, Masto hive mind, can anyone recommend indie makers to me? I'm trying to support small businesses more, so direct from the maker, or from a specialist shop that promotes indies would be ideal. (Bonus points if they're in the UK like I am, so save postage/carbon footprint!)

Jyoti, to random
@Jyoti@mas.to avatar

Is it me or are people less arsey on Mast?

Like, the whole Twitter hierarchy thing, I don't get so much on here?

If I follow a famous and they never interact ever with anyone else, I unfollow them.

I'm here for dialogue, not monologue.

(Of course, some people seek the validation of parasocial adulation. Fair does but nope.)

(Also, dialogue doesn't mean insulting me / being a knobhead. I block at the slightest breeze of twattery.)

crinolinerobot,
@crinolinerobot@bytetower.social avatar

@Jyoti I really appreciate being able to follow hashtags. Takes me back to my usenet days in a way, being able to use social media for subjects, not individuals.

I've deliberately avoided work-connected stuff on Masto as I get more than enough of that on the Birdsite. Masto is inspiration and recreation.
