"In Praise Of The Basics"

"Long live the basics! Long live the “a-ha!” moments that help us all fall in love with the World Wide Web."

Why I 🧡 the web:

Someone made a customizable "shadow map": Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time.

@davidbisset i wasn't expecting it to work on a per-building level thats awesome.

Just wanted to say happy 21st anniversary to . 🎉

It’s provided a solid means to earn a living plus I have enjoyed connections from one of the better communities on the web. It has and will continue to face challenges, but it’s been a survivor and continues to be an example of a long time champion of the web.

Interesting approach (encoding and persisting the content in the URL)

A simple taking toll in your browser can you host yourself. No servers. No cookies.

@davidbisset You saw that I did this with a Scrabble game, right?

Interesting how people have been playing with this idea.

Why new features aren't getting fast adoption as one might think.

https://mxb.dev/blog/old-dogs-new-css-tricks/

"While there are many different reasons for the slow adoption, I think one of the biggest barriers are our own brains."

bobmagicii,
@bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

@davidbisset "new feature fatigue" is a legit problem. it was the main reason that caused me to ignore flexbox for like 6 years. already had too many other things to deal with.

davidbisset,

@bobmagicii my guess is that I would use this for something that I wouldn’t care who was spying. Low risk?

@davidbisset it will be interesting to see what happens after they start getting millions of bounces a day. like say if a bunch of people used this just to get an account started on a website they wanted to be anonymous on. but the site doesn't know it was ultra transient and continues to send notifications to it.

RIP to a real #oldschool web tech.

"#ICQ will stop working

I think this it for ICQ. I used to remember my ICQ by heart.

@davidbisset Can we please end this capitalist insanity of big eating less big? Maybe just be happy with the piece of pie we already have, eh Microsoft?

matcha.css is a "drop-in semantic styling library in pure #CSS".

https://matcha.mizu.sh/

Designed to style #HTML elements similarly to a default browser stylesheet, eliminating the need for users to manually patch their documents.

Ideal for fast prototyping, static HTML pages, #Markdown generated documents, etc.

Thanks to someone throwing a rock through my car window, I’m in the wonderful process of adding security cameras and updating my Wi-Fi. For the first time I’m going to try using a Wi-Fi extender and see if that improves the signal and the other end of my house.

If that doesn’t work, I might be shopping for a new router. If there’s any place to talk/vent tech, it would be here.

theofrancis,
@theofrancis@mastodon.online avatar

@davidbisset I started with an extender and found it frustrating. Switched to a mesh network, and I've been much happier. YMMV

davidbisset,
@davidbisset@phpc.social avatar

@theofrancis interesting. Well, I am keeping in mind a return policy. What did you get? I assume you add that to existing router or does that come with one (stupid question alert)?
