Mastodon feature question of the day: why can't I 'follow' or 'subscribe' to a toot? Like if I somebody asks a question and I want to keep up to date with that people answer to it, why can't I subscribe to that toot so I get a notification if somebody comments something.
I am looking into bullding a new gaming PC because my old one is getting ancient (FX 8320 + 1060 6GB) and was looking into a AMD GPU for a couple reasons:
I run #Linux, and I keep hearing that #AMD works better with it, especially #Wayland
I hear performance is on par or better than Nvidia cards these days
I hear it's cheaper compared Nvidia
But I'm having my doubts about that last point. 🧵 (1/3)
Because, for what I can find for prices here in the Netherlands, the cheapest 3060 is about €200 cheaper than even the cheapest RX 6800 XT. Is this just a local Netherlands thing or have these cards gotten a lot more expensive for some reason? 🧵 (2/3)
Possible 🌶️ take, but I think it makes sense that #youtube wants to stop #adblock. It takes a lot of money to run YT. And to make it accessible for free is insane financially. And while I don't think you should have to pay for access. Having an ad supported version and a ad-free 'premium' version, makes sense imo.
Do I think they need to regulate the kind of ads they show more? Yes. Do I think there needs to be a system for disabling ads on emergency videos like CPR? Yes. But having ads on itself doesn't sound like a bad solution to me.
As someone who hasn't played a lot of #Skyrim in the past and just started again a couple of days ago. Holy shit this game is buggy! And I'm not even talking about the original release, I'm talking about the Special Edition from 2016. #gaming#linuxgaming#SteamDeck#rpg#pcgaming
Got this interesting find yesterday at a local #thriftstore. A #stadia controller in basically mint condition. Missing the Chromecast Ultra tho, can't say I'm surprised by that. But now that you can turn these into regular Bluetooth controllers after the shutdown of the Stadia service, you can still use them. I got this for €20, which is a good price if you ask me when you take into consideration that a #Xbox or #playstation controller can be around €50 - €70! #thrifting
I've started some projects and many I never finished. Often because I hit a roadblock and felt I didn't have the skill to continue. Because of this, when I want to start a new project, I hesitate, because I'm afraid of dropping it and 'wasting money and time'. Recently I've deciced to push myself past that and go with a "fuck it and just try" attitude. The project I've decided to go with is a project I wanted to make for a long time, a pocket computer. And I want to share the process here. #diy
I want to have a small pocketable (or at last something that can easily fit into a backpack) #linux computer, so I can fiddle with a Linux system on the go and do some light coding on the go. And it might also be a fun and hipster way to read email and #RSS feeds idk. I was thinking of it mainly consisting of a #RaspberryPi Zero W 2, a 5 inch display, a Li-po battery (not sure what capacity would be optimal), a charger board and a small keyboard. #diy#maker
Adding an easy way to create a Mastodon account on mastodon.social to the official app? Yes, please.
I don’t understand the drama around this. Not like it’s removing other instances, or the ability to switch instances afterwards. It just gives an easier way in for people who don’t understand the instances concept.
It’s a good thing. Anything that helps onboarding is a good thing, and no, it doesn’t mean the developer has gone evil or wants to centralize things. 🙄🙄
But what was the reason for those people switching tho? Usually, for what I've seen so far, its either that their instance shut down or they had a conflict with the the other users or a admin or something. I don't hear a lot of people switching just because. But it could be that I've only come across the refugees, to give them a name.
I get this. Throwing an idea into the crowd here. Since the Mastodon website already has a list of some instances put into categories. Is it maybe an idea to put that into the sign up progress of the official app? To ask to join one of those instances when signing up. Like how reddit asks you to join a couple subreddits based on interests or Tumblr asked a similar question (I think? It's been a while...)
True. But if one of (keyword being one of) the reasons for federation is that it spreads users out more across servers and instances, then I don't think those reasons are not enough. Especially if people don't realize they can join instances for specific communities or interests.
Maybe I'm very ignorant about this, but why exactly is the ability to be able to search within the contents of toots (aside from hashtags) controversial?
I can understand the first point. I don't know about the second point tho. Wouldn't Google or other search engines be able to index posts now too? And can't topic trolling be done now too by hashtags?

I don't know... That feels like shooting yourself in the foot when it comes to even being found by people with similar interests/opinions. I assume most people want to be found, maybe not by everybody, but at least by some people. I assume (correct me if I'm wrong) that most people don't want to yell into a void.
