@jesse she's probably had mild COVID three times. My wife couldn't work for a week and a friend of mine has been on disability for the past couple years…
HOW OFTEN must governments make the same fucking mistake? We made it Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Carpet bombing style warfare never does much besides destroy shit that just has to be rebuilt eventually. All it does is lose the hearts and minds of the locals. Who then just want to kill you.
@shoq I don't think Israel cares much about the hearts and minds of Palestinians. Even if they started to treat them humanely tomorrow, It'd take many generations for them to forgive/forget the last half a century
I lived in NYC on 9/11. It was bad. Scary watching the way the country changed, and was shaped to change. But, in the days after the attack I remember thinking. "Well, at lest the people who did this won't go unpunished. They will be found." I thought it was a silver lining on all the vengeance in the air.
Heh.
Boy was I wrong about that. American pain & anger was shaped to serve all manner of purposes. The one person most people agreed was "responsible" roamed free for years.
@futurebird@llewelly if vertebrates went extinct do you think invertebrates would eventually grow to large sizes? like could there be insects the size of dogs and beyond? if it did happen, what features would you expect to evolve that would allow such a thing?
Listen I know we need a lot of variables in math. A single alphabet won’t due. So capital and lower case letters can be different variables. I can even roll with the idea that letters of the same case in different typefaces can be distinct— but, I still find the abusive use of C in Hoggs Mathematical Statistics a little extreme… we couldn’t get more distinct typefaces? How many students have cried because you did this, Hogg? (i otherwise love this textbook it’s so much fun) /math rant
Did you know that you're allowed to be sad about children being killed? You don't even need to explain your political beliefs to justify why you are sad about children being killed. Some people on the internet may try to tell you otherwise, but they are what we call "not worth listening to".
A while back I had this comic script I didn't end up using where politicians create AI duplicates so they can communicate personally with every single constituent. I wonder how long before a campaign tries an LLM version of this?
@ZachWeinersmith i was under the impression that LLMs needed more text in their training set than any person produces in their lifetime :ablobthinking:
For the sake of empathy, I ask you all to take a second to consider things from the perspective of Conservatives:
Inflation is out of control. Housing is unaffordable. The healthcare system is broken. Everyone is drowning in student debt. Ecosystems are collapsing. We're constantly on the brink of war.
So naturally, one would ask, how can we even hope to solve these daunting and complex issues if we do not have detailed information on the genitals of every American citizen?
