Kate, 23, said it wasn't as hard to buy a house as people made out.

"I just cut my expenses. Unlike my friends, I didn't go out, I ate at home, I watched free to air TV instead of Netflix and I thrift shopped. Add that to the $500,000 my parents gave me for a deposit, and I was able to achieve my goals in just 6 months"

In his rally speech, Pierre promised he's "going to bring home" a "new & better" Canada that sounds like an imaginary 'Leave it to Beaver' episode.

"Children skipping to school without fearing for their safety. Seniors waving at friendly shop keepers. Parents calling their road hockey playing kids to bed. A young couple sitting on the porch, soaking in the warm evening air with a Canadian flag gently hanging from the front door of their brand new home."

Quit complaining about . There are many places to live in Canada besides and .

“Here's a look at Canadian towns, cities and even entire provinces that have offered incentives to entice future residents, ranging from grants to land listed for only $1.”

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@curmudgeonaf Cool... And do you need a car to live in these places,? There's a reason why Toronto and Vancouver are so popular. Good public transit -- including his inter-city rail -- and cycling infrastructure is the secret sauce.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@curmudgeonaf In a world without climate change that makes sense.

My condo was just over $200K and I'm looking to get rid of my car, because I can walk, bike, or take a streetcar everywhere.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@curmudgeonaf Oh for pity's sakes. That walkable neighbourhood I love so much doesn't happen on my own. Thousands of people live in my little corner, and we all create it together.

The point is, cars are polluting money pits, so any argument that ends with "and you can afford to have a car" is missing something.

You can have cheap housing in rural areas without cars. It looks like this https://youtu.be/muPcHs-E4qc?si=HrSuJdcYlASaKnv3

Except for the fact that they require a license from the state to operate, a loan from a major financial institution to purchase, insurance to shield users from the cost of their harms, and can be used to collect and share driver data without their full consent, cars represent freedom, baby!

@ted @brewsterkahle @kashhill Sigh. This is why I still drive a 2005 Toyota Echo hatchback less than once a week.

One of the reasons I haven't gone electric is that my car sits around so much it would lose charge -- and I don't live in a house, so I can't just top it up whenever.

The other reason is that I'd like to eventually not own a car full stop. Not owning a car beats the mileage on any car.

    Anyone else in the @sewing community on Mastodon watch Emma Stone’s dress fail on the and immediately know why?

    I’m such a geek, I was watching with my wife and I said, “why would they use a #3 invisible zipper on a dress that heavy? They should have a used a #5 invisible zipper, like on wedding gowns!”

    Then I rewinded the PVR to see if I was right, and lo and behold, that invisible zipper is indeed way too light for a dress that thick and heavy!

    Or am I wrong?

    @DanielMenjivar @lil_meow_meow I just watched a YouTube clip -- to me it looks like the bodice was too tight as well. Which probably means the boning and other structural bits were insufficient. There's more fabric under the zip -- a corset maybe?

    Also, either the skirt was too long or the wrong shoes were selected for it. It just didn't fit her.

    I have for the first time heard about the No Mow Day movement.

    It is not a comment practice in the USA and I have never heard of this until a user talked about it.

    It is a movement that we fully understand, and even in the area that I live in it will be a hard thing to implement, we think that it is ok not to mow the lawn for May.

    Although here we are trying to put on year-round strategies by creating specific gardens and spaces for the pollinators.

    Spraying compost into those areas and your lawn will make the topsoil more resilient and help the biodiversity and biology to develop.

    @itsmeholland @compost @ClimateJenny @_noelamac_ When I was a kid, my neighbours had a "lawn" of clover because their lot was large and very hilly -- they would never be able to mow it. Stays short, stays green, looks great.
