We Are 15 Million

As the network is decentralized, counting these numbers will always be inaccurate and other counting methods yield different results, but this is still something to celebrate.

As of 13:12 (GMT+1) on the 18th of March 2024, Mastodon now has 15 million user accounts.

15.000.000 people, bots, collaboratives, newspapers, coops, movements!

I believe in the ability of this network to steadily grow, but never explode in size to subsequently burst like a bubble. I believe in this approach of social networking and that it is the more human-oriented, non-commercial approach we need in order to fix our societal, personal, and political divide.

We are here because we disagree with our data being harvested in order for our “free” communication platforms to be maintained. We disagree with locking users into an ecosystem and removing our ability to choose which platform to call ours.

We are here because we disagree with profit-driven social networks entirely.

We will not leave nor settle for anything less.

Thank you, Mastodon! :mastodon: Thank you, Fediverse! :fediverse:

What's a good movie to watch with your Mom?

eyrea, (edited )
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@RickiTarr Horror that is fast-paced but not too gory.

My mum can handle gore better than I can. She loves The Walking Dead and The Shining.

We both agree on Hitchcock, so that would be a good bet.

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@qurlyjoe @RickiTarr Now I love that movie -- it might be too much vindt and not enough horror for my mum (and she's not going to get the pop music references, because New Order and Queen were my youth, not hers). I should ask her if she's seen it, thank you!

I Can’t Tell if This Is a Gender Thing.

Gas station attendants ask me if I want my windows cleaned and, mostly out of habit, I say “Oh, no thank you” and then they do it anyway.

I’m not at all upset, and as it’s all-cars-are-brown season in Winnipeg, the windows usually do need cleaning. But it’s happened often enough with different attendants (all masc) that it’s a pattern.

Is this a gender thing? The lady don’t know what her car needs? Or am I hallucinating?

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@miriamrobern Sounds like you're bang-on to me.

It's not even specifically car knowledge. It's just being underestimated. And yeah, it's kind of insidious because you're never sure if it's a gender thing or a that specific person thing or a specifically you thing.

Before I bring my machine in for servicing, I'm speaking to the collective wisdom here: last night, I was happily sewing darts into a bag when the machine suddenly slowed down dramatically, then stopped (I press the pedal and it complains and doesn't move). I can turn the handwheel, but it really doesn't want to.

I'd just cleaned out the lint (and cleaned some more after this happened), and I've applied sewing machine oil. Anything else to check?

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

The exciting conclusion to my machine crisis: I brought it in for servicing and the sewing centre owner kindly looked at it right away (though he was transparent about how that might not happen every time).

A big thank-you shout-out to Beaches Sewing Centre here in , and to everyone who helped me troubleshoot here on Mastodon!

@ben I've already been in some discussions about how to streamline onboarding and make it a less scary experience.

That seems to be the recurring theme. The functionality is mostly there, but not the experience, but just things like findability.

Anyone who says, "Daylight Savings is fine because people get up with their alarms anyhow!" forgets that those same alarms tend to have snooze buttons.

I was getting up with about an hour to putter around and do stuff around the house before logging in for work. Now I feel like a zombie when the first alarm goes off and only drag myself to the shower when the absolute minimum of ready time is left.

It's a good thing I rarely have morning meetings.

My response to the person who tried to get me to join a membership organisation by saying that they were campaigning against car reduction measures on the ground that they might harm small businesses...

Cartoon show a woman showing an empty set of shelves and saying "This is where we keep all studies that show how car reduction schemes lead to lower shop revenue"

eyrea,

@Jgmeadows @kim_harding Yeah. The same people who will troll a woman for saying it's about damn time cars had a logical place to keep one's purse are very dedicated to worrying about other people whenever this comes up.

Okay, I say "No worries!" a lot. Like... a lot a lot. It has a bunch of uses, mostly when people apologize for trivial things or when my kids are anxious.

(Why does she say "No worries?" Because when she was 11 she saw it in a RPG about heroic mutant animals in Australia and immediately adopted it because she's a dingbat.)

For various reasons, I'd like to drop this phrase, but I struggle to find alternatives. Any suggestions, chat?

(No, "Dinna fash" isn't any better; I'm not Scottish.)

eyrea,

@miriamrobern I picked up "cool beans" from someone I used to work with.

I've reported on machine learning (what most people call AI) for a while. Artists and writers were early targets for machine learning systems because our creations were easy to steal and very visible.

Now software engineers and programmers are being targeted. 1/ https://venturebeat.com/ai/cognition-emerges-from-stealth-to-launch-ai-software-engineer-devin/

eyrea,
@eyrea@mstdn.ca avatar

@jasonsanford The one thing artists, writers, and software engineers/programmers have in common is that they often do overtime for free because they love what they do so much.

That's one thing I'm finding weird (I mean, I think I understand why, but it's still weird). They're going after the people who were giving better than their paid value.

A few nights ago, I dreamed I was coming up with a song and starting to record the chorus on my phone when an alarm went off and interrupted me. That was my real alarm on my phone, so I woke up and continued recording the song. It's called "Support," and I may actually finish it one of these days.

When my wife got home from work, she offered to make dinner. Nice!

But then 2½ hours later, I went into the kitchen and saw the oven wasn’t preheated, the box of fish was unopened and she just finished cutting up potatoes into fries.
