Oh my days, there are SO many stories and questions in that brief clip.

How? Where'd the water come from? Why is there algae growing on the surface; how long has that water been there? Is that cereal mixed with donuts or mass frog eggs or...? Just.. why is there a watermelon in bed with that person? How are they asleep?

... it just keeps getting better 🤣

ezlin,

Agreed, but I'd say there's more to this. I strongly dislike gov't spying, obviously. Yet a more germane concern for day-to-day people are data breaches. They're so common that it only makes sense to assume that it'll hit every site that you use, it's only a question of when.

Ergo encrypt everything. Not ONLY because of gov't spying - though sure, that too - but because "hackers" so frequently steal costumer data.

Google is not immune to this. Oh do I have a story for you there.😓

ezlin, to random

hm. Do I spend $30 (after shipping) on another security key, but this one can store 50 (as well as work as a standard ) entries.

Compared to which is $50 (before shipping) and stores only 32 TOTP.

It'd only be around $22, but it apparently ships from Switzerland?

https://www.token2.net/shop/category/fido2-with-totp

But it's still $20 less than the Yubikey that does the same thing but with less storage.

Oh it's tempting!

Gotta sleep on it. G'night world!

ezlin,

@schizanon

Oh nice! it looks like you can take advantage of the more reasonable price offered by these keys. 👍

I have a Yubikey and an NFC+ key. You pretty much need more than one key just in case one gets destroyed or lost.

I haven't used Token2 but I did find some Reddit posts on them, and folks were saying that they were using the keys just fine as FIDO2 keys.

ezlin,

@schizanon

Yeaaahhh the number of services that use them is WAY too few. Blows my mind. Never have a "hacked" (🙄) account again, but nooo.

Mastodon supports them, which is fantastic.

I need to lay down, the meds have me derpy.

Good night world. o/

Many think that passwords with random characters are more secure.

Truth is: "four random common words" make the best password - secure and easy to remembers! 🔒

What is your password strategy?

Here are more facts about passwords and security: 👇

ezlin,

@Tutanota

Basically they're all just Bitwarden generated passwords these days. However, prior to this, the comic is exactly what I'd do.

Though these days they force at least one number and one special character, that's still easier to remember than 1337 5p34k.

behaved well for me today. I didn't do much - just one package job - but it was an excuse to take the Cutter Scout out for a whirl.

Then I sat on microTech while watching YouTube videos and enjoying the winter wonderland mountain vista.

Can't complain.

I could get the A1 bomber for $10. This is how SC makes so much money: By exchanging ships & simply paying the difference.

I won that Taurus ages ago. Free $190 upgrade path.

But I'd have no use for the bomber with my playstyle.

ezlin,

@scopique

Hah! Yeah, exactly. Then there are the $3 paint jobs.

Even if I spent per year what I've spent this year in SC, and I then stretched that over 10 years I'd have just under a grand.

10 years is a long time.

Buuuut then look at my FFXIV subscription. No one would bat an eye, but if that were added up over the years, well, it'd be over a grand.

Let's not think too much about THAT though. :apartyblob: 😅

This creepy new feature on by default & scans every file on your phone. Why is this bad? Because it could potentially ruin your life. (1/3)

ezlin,

I've always assumed that both Google, Microsoft, and online image hosting sites did this. But leave it to google to do sloppy AI image matching and ruin someone's life.

I've seen ReCaptcha. That poor thing doesn't even know what a fire hydrant is, let alone something this serious.

I wonder how long until video game screen shots get flagged by someone's jank algorithm.

The Fake Browser Update Scam Gets a Big Makeover

One of the oldest malware tricks in the book — hacked websites claiming visitors need to update their Web browser before they can view any content — has roared back to life in the past few months. New research shows the attackers behind one such scheme have developed an ingenious way of keeping their malware from being taken down by security experts or law enforcement: By hosting the malicious files on a decentralized, anonymous cryptocurrency blockchain.

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2023/10/the-fake-browser-update-scam-gets-a-makeover/

ezlin,

@briankrebs

I suppose this was only a matter of time.

On the bright side, I already have multiple browsers installed. Ultimately, if I open another browser or not depends on how much I want to view the site, versus the overwhelming urge to tell them to sod off for their horrible 1990's design philosophy.

Typically the latter wins. If one site has it, so does 100 other sites.

Would you still use WhatsApp if it had ads or move to another messenger?

Good to know: Your secure mailbox @Tutanota has zero ads, but 💯! 😎

ezlin,

Unfortunately it's not my choice. If I could convince others to use something else, I would. However, after Signal dropped support for SMS, everyone dropped Signal & they now only use WhatsApp.

This is a frustrating situation and, frankly, I think that they'll be shocked to eventually find that their conversations are not actually private.

Despite my telling them this for some time.

As it is, I rarely open it to check for messages & I have its notifications disabled.

ezlin, to linux

So I finally booted into (on the USB).

First impression is that it seems nice & appears to be very user friendly. So that's cool.

OTOH, two monitors of a different resolution are a problem. AMD doesn't have all of its features on linux. it's extremely barebones. On Windows I use VSR to upscale my 1080p to 2160p. Can't seem to do that in Linux.

The installer couldn't tell how much space had been used on most of my drives, so installing

ezlin,

is far less intuitive than I would like. Especially since I have no intention of wiping a single drive for it, so I need to see how much is available & how much has been used so as to know "this is the drive I decided to use".

So that's a bit disappointing.

The problem it has with the displays though, that's a deal breaker in itself. Two such very different resolutions are a huge PITA to use.

An over all positive experience with it though.

ezlin,

I was also surprised that Baldur's Gate 3 had the option to install to Mint. Obviously the "Live" version didn't have the storage space for it, but that was a nice surprise.

ezlin,

and to be fair, the fact that AMD's Linux drivers are so barebones is not a Linux issue. That's an AMD issue.

But I had ZERO features available to my GPU and CoreCtrl doesn't seem to provide those features, though it did provide graphs for performance metrics.

ezlin,

@Akzel

Everything other than the strictly necessary bits to make the drivers technically functional.

Display settings, audio settings, & game specific settings.

I knew that AMD drivers were available & generally well maintained on Linux, so I was not expecting the absolute barebones version of it.

The barebones install IS available on Windows, but I use all of these features.

ezlin,

@Akzel

VSR is its own scaling, and Windows scales the font and app sizes. It's customizable but I think that it defaults to its recommended?

For 1080 -> 2160 it recommends 200% scaling. I have mine at 125% to make text legible.
