The website front-end has been restored. We are still investigating the root cause and working on a proper fix.

We’ve rolled the homepage back for the time being as we address issues. Fear not, the new shiny one will be back! We expect to restore it tomorrow.

✨ The new design is back!

The web team identified several issues exposed by launching the new design to so many interested visitors. :) They fixed the issues, re-launched the new design, and have been monitoring things over the past several hours. It looks like we’re good!

Today's the day 🥳✨🌈

The new home page layout is live on https://flathub.org now, including:

  • Banner with 5 featured apps (updated weekly)
  • App of the day
  • New group for trending apps
  • Tabbed section with trending, popular, new and updated apps

This has been almost a year in the making, including tons of work on documentation, backend, frontend, and the actual metadata in apps. Special thanks to @razze and @tbernard!

You may have noticed something different when you share links to apps on Flathub 👀

Every app now gets a dynamically generated “meta image” for sharing on social media, in messaging apps, etc. Give it a try the next time you share a link to your favorite app!

And as an appropriate demo, check out this app that lets you preview how a link will show up on social media before you actually share it:

Developers, to get more control over how your app shows up when shared on social media and ensure it looks its best, be sure to follow the MetaInfo Quality Guidelines!

https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/metainfo-guidelines/quality-guidelines

These guidelines are designed specifically to help ensure your app can be shown in its best light across Flathub and native app stores, whether when featured on the upcoming homepage redesign or in social posts like this.

Thanks to all you developers out there adding brand colors to your apps over the past months we're almost ready to launch featured banners ✨

If you're an app maintainer and haven't done this yet for your app, here are the docs: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/appdata-guidelines/quality-guidelines

To make it more interesting we're setting a deadline! We will be launching the new banners on April 20th, so for the possibility to be featured during the first week, update your apps today :)

I think @flathub should implement an official way for apps to indicate if they're using offline and/or online AI/LLM features, and require all apps using such to disclose which type. This should be displayed prominently, like the verified/unverified badge or the "potentially unsafe" or "community built" thingies.

Also Gnome Software.

I don't want to install and run the app before finding I can't use it b/c it's sending my data to the most evil corps in the world

@forteller online LLM features are covered by OARS social-info:

>Information Sharing
>
>Defined as sharing information with a legal entity typically used for advertising or for sending back diagnostic data.
>
>For example, this would include sending your purchasing history to Amazon.
>
>None
>Mild: Using any online API, e.g. a user-counter
>Moderate: Sharing diagnostic data not identifiable to the user, e.g. profiling data
>Intense: Sharing information identifiable to the user, e.g. crash dumps

Today we celebrate reaching 1000 verified apps on Flathub 🎉

That is 40% of all apps we can confirm is published by its original developer or a third party approved by the developer ✔️

This is still just the beginning and verification will certainly play a bigger role in the future :flatpak:

Thank you to all developers and maintainers ❤️

@flathub@floss.social avatar

You may have seen the “Verified” badge on apps from Flathub which shows that the developer has proven ownership of their app, e.g. via their website or code host.

With great adoption (nearly 1,000 verified apps!), we’re trying something out to help with transparency:

⚠️ Unverified

If you see this, it flags that the app has not been verified by its developer—it’s effectively a community-maintained package.

@flathub@floss.social avatar

This provides a bit of clarity around the source of apps while helping increase trust for the growing number of verified apps. While we don’t require apps be verified or submitted by upstream developers, we highly encourage it.

Let us know what you think!

As a reminder, we’ve always human-reviewed every app submission on Flathub before it reaches users. Read about our other moderation improvements e.g. when permissions or an app’s name changes: https://docs.flathub.org/blog/improved-build-validation

Developers: we’ve updated our documentation covering how to automatically submit app updates to Flathub: https://docs.flathub.org/docs/for-app-authors/updates#automatically-publish-updates

By using our External Data Checker, you can automatically propose (and optionally merge) updates to your app’s manifest when you make a new release or tag on your source repository; no manual fiddling with JSON or Yaml required.

After it’s merged, your update will automatically be built and submitted to Flathub.

Flathub is about to be a whole lot more colorful - but we need your help!

Thanks to the recent port to libappstream Flathub now supports the AppStream brand colors, which we'll need for curated banners on the homepage.

If you maintain an app on Flathub, add brand colors to your app's MetaInfo file today 💅️🌈️

“Improved build validation, increased moderation, and the long-awaited switch to libappstream” by @barthalion

Heads up to app developers: Flathub’s automatic build validation is more thorough now, and includes checks for issues we previously would have only flagged manually. There’s a chance that if your app has been passing continuous integration checks previously, it will fail now; here's why, and what to do about it:
