Is it just me or does anyone else feel that tech journalists think it's their job to sell tech products?

This seems really interesting. Privacy-first analytics with carbon footprint tracker. Their pricing seems outrageously cheap though. There is just no way they can offer unlimited websites and unlimited page views for $19/mo.

Does anyone know if there's a way to make this MacOS pop-up default to the security key option, or skip it instead?

We use Paddle to sell @getkirby and while they are great in general, they've replaced humans with an AI bot for support requests.

This is what our clients must go through if they contact Paddle instead of us. (real redacted protocol) We can only apologize. It's embarrassing to get those protocols. It also causes additional work for us to read through this.

We told Paddle about it without success so far. Please, don't do this. Don't throw a chat bot at customers if this is the result.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby God I hate Paddle. With my company I subscribe to multiple services that all use Paddle for billing. Because Paddle uses their own company info on invoices it becomes such a mess to process my administration. It’s incredibly difficult to distinguish the different services from each other.

I recognise them using their own company info probably makes it a lot easier for companies like yours, but it’s terrible for the consumer.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby Yeah thats what I thought. I totally understand. Just wondering though: what’s the difference with like Stripe or Mollie for example? Do they not automatically handle VAT?

Where did this symbol come from?

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@ernie It's the international (except for North America) standard road sign… so seems likely that’s its origin?

Couldn't find an Apple Vision Pro stand, so I threw together a quick 3D printable one over lunch where it can stand vertically and cover the lens 🥽

Printing now to test it, then I'll put it on Thingiverse or something (no I'm not printing it in steel but that would be cool)

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@christianselig What about the stand it comes with in the box? That one seems quite nice already.

@SaraSoueidan@front-end.social avatar

I'm just gonna come out and say this. It's been literally years now and I can't for the life of me get myself to actually like the clamp() function in #CSS

Even if I write the function myself, I still need to document what it's doing for my future self.

Looking at code I wrote 2 years ago using a complex clamp() declaration that I wrote, I have no idea now what I was doing back then.

I hadn't documented it.

And now I dislike it even more.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@siblingpastry @SaraSoueidan The only compelling use-case I’ve found is fluid design, like with utopia.fyi.

flip, to Ecosia
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

I'm dumbfounded to find Ecosia's new 'AI Chat' feature. Surely, they must know how unsustainable AI is? Am I the only that feels this way?

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

I found this PCMag article where Ecosia CEO, Christian Kroll explains the energy-intensive chatbot:

"Kroll said Ecosia’s tree-planting work already has the company so carbon-negative that adding chatbot sessions to its balance sheet won't matter much. He suggested one would generate at most 1 kilogram of carbon dioxide, on the lower end of some researchers’ estimates."

I don't even know what to say, but what a stupid justification that is.

https://www.pcmag.com/news/microsoft-rate-hikes-for-bing-use-may-put-this-google-alternative-out-of

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

Ofsetting carbon emissions is great and important work. And work that Ecosia is evidently very good at. But that doesn't mean, in my opinion, that you're free to emmit however much you like, as long as you offset it.

Not just because of the many flaws in offsetting, but also because it's just wasteful.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

It also doesn't account for the different types of energy use. For example: AI uses both a lot of energy and water. Altough Ecosia might easily offset the emmissions caused by the energy use of their AI, it can not so easily offset it's water use.

And all of this is on top of the ethical dillemas that arise from both the training data used, aswell as the answers given by the chatbot.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

All of this is, of course, very ironic for a company that just called out COP28 for greenwashing...

@dansup @pixelfed Looks great! But how about placing the ‘Recover my account’ button on the login screen instead? It might make more sense and be easier for users. Also, the button could be replaced by a link that says something like: ‘Forgot which community you’re on? Recover your account.

breadandcircuses, to environment

She's not just talking the talk.

Greta Thunberg is walking the walk.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been found guilty by a Swedish court of disobeying a police order at a protest in Malmo last month.

The 20-year-old avoided a potential prison sentence and has been fined. She pleaded not guilty and told the court: "My actions are justifiable," according to the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

Greta was charged because she refused to comply with police orders to leave the scene during the protest, according to Swedish Prosecution Authority spokeswoman Annika Collin and a statement from prosecutors.

When the protestors were ordered to move to allow vehicles to pass, Greta was among those who refused. She was then dragged away by police.

Earlier in the year, the climate activist was briefly detained by police in Oslo during a protest against wind farms built on Indigenous land in Norway. She was also detained during protests against the demolition of the coal village of Luetzerath in Germany in January.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@skinwalkerpenelope @breadandcircuses Yeah cause obviously the police would let her have a “photo shoot” with them, but still arrest and prosecute her. Makes sense.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@skinwalkerpenelope @breadandcircuses What photo are you talking about specifically? I’ve seen her and talked to her at a protest (in Lutzerath, Germany), and she was constantly surrounded by a sea of cameras. With so many cameras around her, I think you’re bound to get a good, (staged looking) picture of her when she inevitably gets arrested.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@skinwalkerpenelope @ClintonAnderson @breadandcircuses Like I said, I attended that protest (one day before Greta got arrested) and the police was definitely not fake, and there were a lot of them. Also, these aren’t pictures taken by civilians on their phones, but instead by the press who have a legal right to be there take pictures. The police is not allowed to turn them away or delete their pictures.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@adrianmorales @breadandcircuses This isn’t a problem we can NGO or invent ourselves out of, and not for a lack of trying. This problem is the result of the very systems our world is built on, and it requires new legislation and ultimately systems change. And if you knew a little about Greta, you’d know she does talk to “influential people”, but they don’t do anything. Also, ‘be a pacifist,’ did you read the post? She got arrested at a peaceful protest.

flip,
@flip@mastodon.green avatar

@breadandcircuses @chloetse @QueenValhalla Yeah. There’s no point in debating them since they make the same point, repeatedly, and refuse to elaborate. I fell for the bait, but I’ve learned my lesson.

I've been playing with the idea of starting a Solarpunk magazine for some time now. And I'd love to get in touch with some fellow Solarpunks who would like to help me start it.

If you're a writer, artist, designer, or organiser interested in starting a crowd-sourced magazine, please contact me.

To be clear: this is only an idea so far, but I would love to turn it into something bigger, with some help.

@alcinnz Thank you! I'll keep everyone posted. Stay tuned!
