Useful background to Julian Assange's crucial extradition appeal in the UK High Court, which begins today.
Whatever your opinion of Assange, his continued imprisonment and extradition for what many (me included) consider political offences is wrong. If the US is allowed to extradite and try Assange, no publisher or journalist is safe.

“‘Rocks do not breathe, Wulf. Surely then, they cannot have soul?' Wulf watched me steadily, through narrowed eyes.

'Rocks breathe, he said evenly. 'But each breath lasts longer than the life and death for a man. Hills and mountains breathe, but each breath lasts a thousand human lifetimes.'”

— Brian Bates: “The Way of Wyrd” (1983)

The word “weird” (as also discussed by Timothy Morton in “Dark Ecology” descends from the Anglo-Saxon for ‘destiny’ or ‘power/magic’.

I am gonna take the, “did we even watch the same show as the ultra conservative and fascist people saying ‘Trek/Wars/Who has gone ‘woke’” even further, and go with there are pretty much three kinds of successful sci-fi serials:

~dystopian or subversive ones making pretty obvious commentary about fascism

-ones with some slight hope for the human future that have always made at least a little social commentary about how we could make things more egalitarian and open for POC, women, gay people, etc

~shitty space marines with generally poor writing that made ad revenue

And the first two flew over way too many chuckleheads’ noggins.

gavin,
@gavin@mastodon.online avatar

@dko @hacks4pancakes I quite like the idea at the start of this video that scifi films of the types mentioned are like a super accurate picture of what is actually happening now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m1TNXIMTkw

16 October 1943 | Raid of the Ghetto of Rome.

365 German security & police forces sealed off the ghetto. 1,259 people were detained, comprising 363 men, 689 women, and 207 children. Afterwards, non-Jewish people were released while the Jews were detained at the Collegio militare in the Palazzo Salviati in Trastevere.

Two days later, a transport of 1,035 Jews left Tiburtina station and left towards Auschwitz.

Only fifteen men and one woman survived the war.

Does reality make sense - or does it just feel that way most of the time? Jamais vu, a kind of opposite of déjà vu, is when something familiar loses its usual meaning and starts seeming strange.

You can bring on jamais vu by staring at a word. For example, psychologists told people to look at the word 'blood' for 3 minutes. Some reports:

24 seconds: “… b and d look like each other turned backwards, hence meaningless.”
60 seconds: “o's look unfamiliar, staring.”
72 seconds: “b and d look like p and q upside down.”
179 seconds: “a collection of letters”.

Has this happened to you? It happens to me quite easily.

It's also been found that repeatedly checking something can eventually lower your confidence in what you're checking. Like if you check to see if a stove is off 20 times in a row.

Some psychologists call this 'semantic satiation', which hints at a beginning of a theory for what's going on. But there's been much less study of jamais vu than déjà vu, so little is known about it.

The paper I'm reading has a cute title: "The the the the induction of jamais vu in the laboratory: word alienation and semantic satiation." You can read it for free here:

@sarah There's loads of fun services like Polly - so composer installing the PHP sdk is also an interesting start point to see what features are available out of the box.
