@JimsPhotos wow is this a real bird? it's so pretty

Eriospermum paradoxum are confounding desert plants from South Africa. They have a singe leaf that grows out of the bottom of their potato-like tubers. They are often fuzzy and sometimes the single leaf is variegated and spiky so it looks like multiple leaves, but really it's just one leaf. Sometimes they have nothing above ground for years and no one knows why.

They have separate flower stems ... like orchids in that way. Deeply strange plants.

What is the strangest plant you know about?

@futurebird i used to pass by this lovely Hoya carnosa during commutes. their waxy flowers look cute open, closed and also dry

I've been toying with the idea of switching to Linux for a while, and its just getting to that point now, you know? I hear Mint is the best for beginners?

@quinsibell i don't know anything about computermachine and have been using linux mint debian edition since 2019 anyway. if i can do it anyone can

@futurebird @llewelly if vertebrates went extinct do you think invertebrates would eventually grow to large sizes? like could there be insects the size of dogs and beyond? if it did happen, what features would you expect to evolve that would allow such a thing?

@futurebird i dreamt that i was in church with my sibling and a childhood friend. we were leafing trough an old bible and my friend decided to impress us by turning into an ant. as he turned into an ant he jumped into the open bible and started craling around. he then started to tell us if the text matched what happened historically. he could aperantly peer back to the time period described in the passage. hesaid something about jesus and moses being the same person

@futurebird friend do you know what this might be?
it was climbing up a wall when i found it. It seemed to me like it had bulbous head and a flexible “neck”. When transferring it to the paper it seemed to hang from the wall using a string. The leaf shaped section appears to be a hollow shell. The head and neck could disappear into the inside of the shell, even when hanging from the wall. Could it be a bagworm caterpillar? should i relocate somewhere specific? its in a potted plant for now

a tiny bug on a piece of paper it seems to be inside a mottled leaf shaped shell. it moves its head side to side

@AmyIsCoolz @yassie_j ah i've seen the type. i don't like bringing it up because a lot of people are very down on FOSS already, but these attitude is sadly very common on all FOSS related things

@llewelly i imagine these guys being the size of elephants. what do you think the limitant on larger sizes would be for something like this?

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

if the whole venated insect style wing changing into an articulated hydraulic wing pans out then maybe that could result in even larger klis-cha
walking wing forms could develop that would look like if the real animal was walking it's leashed pterosaur pets

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

maybe some of the walking wing forms could even become flightless. it could look like a larger animal is walking it's dogs. perhaps that would be too far. i'm not sure a single "brain" could control 3 large bodies

Why are all the sites on the internet that are just ordinary webpages like antiwiki and formiculture forums, and my friends simple websites so SLOW. Social media, YouTube, anything by a big company is fast, anything homebrew is slow.

Can I blame not having net neutrality?

gay_ornithischians,

@futurebird i've had that issue with ant wiki too. the images won't load when you click on them, you have open them in a separate tab for some reason

friends do you think "animals" in the tetrapod size range that had hydaulic driven limbs would be too heavy to evolve flapping flight of the type seen in birds, bats and pterosaurs?

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@Aviva_Gary @llewelly to be fair stories don't really need to get this stuff right
i am looking into it because i find it fun to come up with speculative organisms and because you learn stuff about reality along the way

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@Aviva_Gary @llewelly i only know of spiders when it comes to hydraulic driven limbs. tho they still use muscles for flexion. the ornithopters i've seen (i think) are mechanically driven

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@llewelly i'm trying to find an ornithopter w hydraulic driven wings as proof of concept but no luck so far lel

gay_ornithischians,
@gay_ornithischians@sauropods.win avatar

@Aviva_Gary @llewelly oh i'll have to look it up too
i wonder if they started out more like the spiders and then reduced the hydraulics but kept them because of the post molting process
