    US Rep Bill Johnson (R-Election Denier) to resign Jan. 21 from Congress, start as Youngstown State University president the next day"

    "The YSU board of trustees voted 8-1 on Nov. 21 to hire Johnson, R-Canfield, after agreeing five days prior at a quickly called emergency meeting to offer him the job.

    The decision was met with vocal criticism from faculty, students, alumni and donors who objected to the confidential search as well as the decision to hire Johnson because of his politics and lack of experience in higher education"

    More complete reporting on the hiring here. Previously, he wasn't going to leave Congress until March 15th. Interesting career decision, that.

    It's like everyone at The Guardian came in still a bit hungover.

    "Officers found 30-year-old Kyler Efinger, a Park City resident, unconscious inside an engine mounted to the wing of a commercial aircraft loaded with passengers, the Salt Lake City police department (SLCPD) announced on Tuesday. The plane had been sitting on a de-icing pad, the engine was rotating at the time, but the cause of Efinger’s death remains unclear."

    My guess is this story was more tragic than we'll ever know.

    People on Threads are all alarmed that bots, Nazis, and assorted poor behaviors are flooding into their precious (months-old) sanctuary. It’s like all the conversations about what Musk and Zuckerberg hath done to us never happened. Almost no one outside Mastodon even talks about it anymore. They just want to know when they’ll get all the features they had on Twitter. That’s the extent of the discourse. Any surprise that almost everything seems to SUCK, lately?

    In many places, original meanings and what they "mean" more overlap quite a lot.

    geographile,
    @geographile@sfba.social avatar

    @Beiz @EU_Commission nor do I. For many folks, both are cultural, Jul is Dec 24–12th Night-ish. Long ago, before (and for many, also after) Christianization, it was a season, a festival, tied to the solstice but not one and the same, from everything I've found searching for that info.

    I celebrate the solstice specifically, whenever it lands, Yule as a season, Yuletide, from then through 12th night, and Christmas as a family holiday full of traditions.

    Modern Scandinavians celebrate Jul in a huge range of ways, just as Americans do Christmas, depending on their beliefs and family traditions, no?

She converted and raised her kids Jewish. Her relationship with her mother was fraught at best, and barely communicative.

    New study proves that COVID-19 is far more harmful and deadly than the flu.

    Dr. Al-Aly wrote, “We observed higher risks of death, healthcare utilization and hits in most organ systems in COVID-19 than the flu. This was evident in pre-Delta, Delta, and Omicron. And also evident in vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. COVID-19 remain a much more serious threat to human health than the flu.”

    Regardless of how you feel about what's going on in , having just one country have veto power in the is ridiculous. The Kremlin also has this power. For instance: https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/02/1112802

    If the United States rolled into Canada with tanks and the UN members voted to issue a demand that we stop doing that, we can veto it.
