I thought Factorio might be dangerous for my free time, so I haven't even started to play it for a long while.

Recently I realized that I'll have a bunch of time so I gave it a go 5 days ago.

Well... I was not wrong.

(I barely play games and there are only a few ones that I played this long.)

@whitequark Oh, that's terrifying. I love that people presenting (on youtube) and talking about them have them in their hands, in front of them on the table while I'd not like to be even in the same building with one of these knowing what they do.

I wonder how the QA went back then... "Aaand there's no fire anymore, Herbert. Let's mass produce these babies right now. Herbert?... Well, I'll do it anyway."

It also reminds me of a book I had when I was a child, it is titled "What you definitely need to know about Camels" and one of the "facts" was the reason behind camels coming with one and two humps is so they can be packed neatly. And here is the proof they were right! :)

(There was a whole series of this "What you definitely need to know about ..." books but I think they were only released in Hungarian.)

Clutter Rush, my game for the 20 Second Game Jam is online. Check it out if you have 20 seconds to spare.

https://gheja.itch.io/clutter-rush

The assets are all based on free ones (models by Bubble Tea and Zorro Infernal, music by Kevin MacLeod (Incompetech), sounds by Kenney ( @kenney), more on About screen).

It was a fun opportunity to learn animation with Blender and Godot, and to experiment with 3D graphics, I learned a lot.

So I tried to make my own dual color filament by printing a spiral with 1.75 mm diameter, swapping colors around halfway.

I wanted one to be the glow in the dark PETG (yellow in the slicer) and the only other PETG I had was black (green in the slicer). So I went with these.

Despite having 6 and 5 layers of them, the result was mostly black.

The test print shows some great glitter like glowing and I kinda love it but it's faint and not what I'm after. Now printing the second dual!

The printed result of the dual color filament, one half (6 layers) is Extrudr Glow in the Dark PETG, the other half (5 layers) is 3DJAKE Black PETG. I cleaned it up a bit before using it.
A model printed with my custom dual color filament, it's a Snorlax and I did no clean up at all. It's in the light, the black color can be seen and I don't think any of the other color is visible at all.
The same Snorlax print as in the previous picture, now in the dark. The glow in the dark filament is visible like glitter. It's pretty faint, this is a 8 second exposure. To the naked eye it is easily visible but still faint.

@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@po3mah It is the Low Poly Snorlax by Agustin Arroyo on Printables: https://www.printables.com/model/318081-low-poly-snorlax

For the filament I made a simple spiral with 1.75 mm diameter circle in FreeCAD, sliced in PrusaSlicer, with one color change (M600) on a layer.

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@po3mah Okay, I'll share it somewhere, but it's quite a big STL (both in file size and 1.4 million triangles) and I'm not sure it worth sharing on Printables in this format. I'll probably upload to Dropbox when I get the chance.

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@po3mah I have uploaded it to Dropbox.

It is a spiral of a circle with a diameter of 1.75 mm, it is starting from a 6 cm radius, has 5 turns, total length is about 210 cm.

Added a respawn animation; also experimented with the idea of changing the time of day with every death and screen transition

2D Pixelart platformer: showcase of respawn animation, that also changes the time of day

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@birdibirdson I love your art stlye and the smoothness of... well, everything!

One random idea, have you tried reversing the death or spawn animation so they are in one flow, not a bounce to/from black? I.e. the death animation's black spot starts from the player and fills the screen, then the spawn starts from the player as well. It might worth a shot if you haven't in my opinion.

Smartphones cost way too much now. Sure everyone uses them, but they keep pushing more powerful hardware mostly by bloating software, deprecating stuff way too rapidly, and batteries slowly improve but they are just fighting an uphill battle with software and hardware.

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@djlink Don't get me started on Messenger getting 2 second response times and slow typing on older phones while their feature set essentially haven't changed.

Just kidding. I won't get started. Or at least not more than this. I still got things to do today. And any other day, too. Companies - both in hardware and software - pulling shit like this should not exists. Good day sir. I said good day!

I love how bad decision is a wake up call for so many developers. They are quickly realizing they are game developers first and tool users second.

And while I love how many other engines are being considered as replacements, it makes me even more happy that a bunch of devs will be interested again on learning engine development.

Also, using a third party engine is a cost cutting measure for so many studios, but I hope they will now weight the pros and cons a little more carefully.

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@glaskows I think the worst part is they changed their own EULA retroactively, they removed the "you are bound by the EULA you developed/shipped your game with" and added fees.

This is likely illegal - according to a few people who knows more of laws than me - and most likely will be reverted.

So I think gamedevs will be able to at least stick with the older edition until they find out what their next steps will be.

The second worst part is trust, at least I hope people won't forget easily.

I'm pretty sure Mastodon is the first social network I've been on that didn't immediately ask me to betray all of the people in my address book.

gheja,
@gheja@mastodon.social avatar

@briankrebs And it's also a fun thing when an app just plainly refuses to start when you don't allow the permissions it wants.

That's why I loved PrivacyGuard for CyanogenMod (also loved my Motorola Milestone 2), it gave a third option: give access to a fake resource: empty contact list, a dummy location, etc.

I miss that.
