Can a person be for without full ? I think so.

The evidence behind human cognitive processing being model-first is piling up so fast, it is hard to consider anything but the case that the person’s internal model for their gender is the primary deciding factor in how they experience the world.

However, there is a line where the human ends and the animal begins. And this is where the bets for cognitive processing also have to come off.

Hi. Anybody want to start a project for -powered clientside in a client with me?

I see the problem is the following: People want the ease of use that comes with ”semantic search”. But any actor providing filtering by algorithm is bound to self-optimize it to suit engagement.

A tech-savvy nerd can set up their fediverse experience via lists, instance following etc. But a normie can’t even imagine that. But what they can, is talking to a computer about what they like!

Another shocking piece of statistics:

In 10 years the amount of US youth thinking a collegr education is very important for them has plummeted from 70% to 40%!

(Source: The AI Breakdown podcast)

Very grim news. Are they all going to be social media influencers and hustle crypto or natural health products for a living?

My thought is that all these people are going to need someone to blame, and not have the skills to pick apart lies. Ripe fruit for picking for a future fascist demagogue.🥶😰

Shocking statistics from Heather Cox Richardson:

”30% of young Americans think the army running the country is a good idea.”

Yet they somehow also think they’ll be free. 😨

I think on a principal level referring to ’s ”smarts” as ”” is misleading. Not because it’s inherently wrong but because intelligence is such a loaded term.

I’ve found more productive terms to be:

  1. Describer
  2. Contextualizer
  3. Pattern generalizer
  4. Resynthesizer

It’s much better to say ”smart” than intelligent. Leads to less bad inferences when discussing with laypersons who aren’t philosophically priored to draw the fine line in the sand themselves

With bleak news form Israel & Gaza, I think the only solution is that we should return to international co-operation.

Looking at the death spiral the situation has been on for a long time, it feels to me there were less people dying when UN peacekeeping forces were there.

Left to their own, the poison between of the two sides keeps getting thicker, not thinner. Propaganda keeps getting stronger, arguments more conservative.

Naomi Klein lays it plain on why the left is losing people to the right in her new book ’Doppelganger’:

… when entire categories of people are reduced to their race and gender, and labeled ”privileged”, there is little room to confront the myriad ways that working-class white men and women are abused under our predatory capitalist order, with left-wing movements losing many opportunities for alliances …

About the ’New Left’ I love that it was able to let go of seeing everything through the lens of class struggle and embrace free markets.

But it also has been shooting itself in the foot in the by abandoning the working class in favour of minority issues.

Not that they don’t matter, but it is increasingly looking like a feel-good scam for the rich to keep treating their employees like shit, ”because they’re taking care of the little guy”.

Sorry. I’m on your side, but watch out!

What is the best book in Iain M Bank’s ”Culture” series, and why is it Surface Detail? 🤔

Ok. Player of Games, Use Of Weapons and Excession are awesome too. But if any should be made into a screenplay now it would surely have to be Surface Detail

It really puts forward where values can lead, if we let a sly techie give traditionalists all the in the world: They’ll just use it to enforce their hate & fear on everyone

It seems one of the smartest people I know in physics, Eric Weinstein, has joined the fold of ”Russia was provoked into attacking Ukraine by countries joining NATO”.

This common fold, where Americans project their own world view on East Europe without any regard to the horrors it has faced while ”protected” by Russia.

That such smart people still don’t call themselves not knowing about the issue enough to comment truly is zeitgeist.

Let ’im have it !

Interesting quotes from a Hanzi piece on the as ”the shamans” of late modernity.

”And so, this late-modern shamanism interconnects the classes of society. It interconnects the most divergent personalities. It includes people who frequent the psychiatric ward, the people who work there as doctors and therapists, and the theorists who in turn inspire those.”

The people who exist beside the social hierarchy: making the normies of us much more connected.

”Meaning and purpose are just a distracted person’s imaginary friends.”

Sam Harris said this, and I want you to pay attention to any resistance you have to this idea?

Now, if you can let go of that resistance, then you can get to really utilising meaning and purpose in your life.

Like our feelings, they aren’t real. But every person feels something like them, and it’s the similarity of feeling-structures that is the key to using them, even if the statement holds.

Experts estimate a 90% chance of a gpt-4 equivalent model running on a single laptop by 2026.

What that means, is that one person can invest less than a thousand dollars to fool 95% of people into synthetic relationships originating from this single laptop.

One laptop can easily handle thousands of social media bots, tens of thousands of email accounts, tens of live chats.

Mass has never been this easy. Democratic societies have 2 years to act.

The people most likely to say ”Do your own research” do no more research than anyone else. However, saying so often correlated with holding more incorrect beliefs about scientific results, not less.

I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no-one, but it has now been studied. 🙂

The term helps people to appear as scientific, informed & responsible, but online the term has morphed into a rallying call for distrust in anyone else & cherry-picking confirmatory evidence.

🧵 I continue to be amazed at , or the idea that freedom from any form of control is always the right answer.

It tends to result in people who systematically look down on all ways society tries to care for the disadvantaged, even warning labels on products.

One person for example made jokes about labels on cigarette boxes, and ”SOLVENT ABUSE CAN KILL INSTANTLY” on scent dispensers in toilets. He was bright-eyed in declaring how those make people abuse the products more.

Regarding the political sway of podcast hosts like Joe Rogan. 🧵

It has always been the case that popular broadcasters shape the political narrative. They used to all be on radio or television, but with modern media podcasts have taken an increasingly large role in shaping public discourse.

Young 25-year old doctor killed first day on the job by Russian #WarCrime.

A stark reminder of what’s happening to #Ukraine: A ruthless empire trying to take back the world into the 1800’s, by any means necessary.

And if we let them, more #war will follow. And follow. And follow. Obeying the rules is not in their dictionary.

Harari:

We teach of in schools about this ultimate evil, ultimate monster. And at some level this is wrong. Because what fascists tell you are always very beautiful and attractive things:

Fascists will tell you that you are wonderful, you are beautiful, you belong to the best group of people in the world, you are ethical, everything you do is good, you have never done anything wrong

This way when you look at yourself in the fascist mirror, you’d never imagine you can be the fascist

Apple makes great products for adults, but with they just don’t hit the mark.

The controls on iOS as an absolute disaster. Feature-wise they seem great, but in practice they break after a few iOS updates, resulting in jammed parent controls and complaining children.

It’s much easier to turn off the screen time than fix them. Which I guess most parents will do.

My opinion? Apple should be fined 10 billion bucks every time a kid commits suicide due to . 🤬
