How a second presidency
could tear apart

This is the moment most of Europe’s leaders hoped they would never see. The date is November 7, 2024, two days after Donald Trump edged out Joe in the presidential election, and already the once-and-future president has announced he will force to strike a peace deal with and cede territories the has claimed as its own.

@hanse_mina Yeah. In the worst case EU would start to need to develop it’s own deterrence.

That would definitely be worse for the whole world if we have to go through that.

If you have not read either of these books, then you really should.

Regardless of whether you like Non fic or not, if you are using this here big old interwebs, then honestly read them both. Start with Doppelganger and then read Code Dependant.

Is technology gonna destroy democracy? What about the whole of humanity?

These books made me worry, but both also gave hope for the future and the power of humanity and most of all communities.

@Pappy @bookstodon Doppelganger is great. I think there’s even a weird glimmer of hope if we take the idea at face value, that MAGA is essentially worried about the same things as Occupy Wallstreet was, just that their solutions are completely backwards and destructive.

Chairwoman of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, once again called on the German government to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles.

"The Chancellor has always assured that he is oriented towards the United States. Now that the US will now deliver long-range ATACMS to Ukraine, it is reason enough to act on the Taurus issue," she added.

@noelreports Get those Taurus to Ukraine. Even the odds.

Why would we let Russia use nuclear threats to secure them the advantage on the battlefield and win anyway? Doesn’t that mean that their nuclear weapons worked to their advantage? Doesn’t that send the signal to world that if you have nuclear weapons your enemies won’t dare to cross you?

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@urwumpe @noelreports Yes, is a tried & true method from Soviet times. Not much has changed in the way Russia handles things.

As a sidenote, I would say Soviets invented MAGA and alt-right in the 1960’s already. These US fools are just late to the game. 😝

When we teach WW1 history and show photographs of men in the trenches, and no one knows if they are real or midjourney fake then we are in deep trouble. Or teach scientific principles through research papers and don't know if the text is authentic human created or response engine output, we are in deep trouble. @DrPen Human autentication are going to be very necessary very soon.

But the problem is, people won’t start to want them until it’s already too late. And when that happens they’ll be ready to sacrifice their privacy for convenience.

When privacy is gone, we’ll be at a risk of losing democracy as well.

That’s why we need to start NOW and develop that ALLOWS for !

While "theft" is probably not a good descriptor of how an image synthesis engine is built, I think the accusation of "plagiarism" is a fair one. The machine is trained on the work of a vast number of artists sourced from multiple databases. We don't know who's in, but more importantly, we don't know who's out. I think it's reasonable to care about the loss of pedigree on the data.

... but it's worth noting that plagiarism tends to be more an academic concern than a corporate concern. An academic's career is built as a peer in a community of idea-traders; to fail to respect the culture of attribution is to be cast out of that community. Corporate espionage and patent violation aside, there isn't really a culture in the corporate world of citing the source of one's ideas; nobody cares if Lego's inventor was inspired by God or by ten years of cobbling in their workshop as long as the pieces click together. So it is, perhaps, a fair criticism that the creators and consumers don't particularly care about.

And, to come back to the example of building the search index for a Google, it's not an issue for that use case because creators feel sufficiently compensated when they get linked to (even though, technically, we have no idea the pedigree of the search engine's choice to synthesize a link-out... It may have directly crawled the site, it may have decided the site was worthwhile from in-links without crawling it, it may be a manual override or a link harvested from a trusted authority on "cool links." Again, nobody complains about "pedigree" or "plagarism" here unless the system is perceived to not be working to their best interests... Notably, other indexes do complain that Google harvests their link-aggregations without consent!).

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@mark Copyright law has been created from the vantage point of humans, and the use-case is what determines if it should be endorsed.

What is at the root of the problem is that we don’t have a clear legal status for the #remix.

The music industry has been able to get by with licencing agreements, but it has not had to deal with an industrial capacity for producing them.

We’re going to need new legislation. Shoehorning stuff to the old wont cut it

If you have documents with the answers you're looking for, why not search the documents directly? Why are you embedding the documents then using (Retrieval Augmenter Generation) to make a large language model give you answers? An LLM generates text, it doesn't search a DB to give you results. So just search the damn DB directly, we already have great search algorithms with O(1) retrieval speeds! are so stupid.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@savvykenya Most jobs are fine with mediocre answers. If a new employee needs to know something and doesn’t know where to look, that’s a pretty good use-case for RAG.
