I was not correct about that assumption! I am now Elizabeth in 2D.

RIP

Good interview and you made great points. I hope some government officials were listening and are now thinking "we can't have another country dumping their space junk on us!"

What is #ESAEuclid? It's a physics experiment and an #ESA space mission 🛰️ - but foremost it's a project imagined, designed, built, and operated by more than 2000 scientists, engineers, and technicians 👩‍🔬 👨‍💻 👩‍🔧.

We are now starting a series of #blog-posts showcasing a cross-section of the people behind #Euclid

First up:

Valeria Pettorino, ESA Euclid Project Scientist

https://www.euclid-ec.org/portraits-of-euclideans-valeria-pettorino

and

Virginia Ajani, Scientist in the Interscience Task Force for Likelihood

Such a good article!

I liked the response to this question, particularly the logic of the final two sentences:

"What should you probably have learned sooner?

I did my best to learn as much as I could, proactively taking training on management, communication, science diplomacy, data science, and all the skills which I felt were needed to fulfil my role. I am OK with what I learned and when I learned it, and also with what I didn’t learn yet. We can’t do everything."

This image perfectly conveys just how huge the 100-m dish of the Green Bank Telescope is. I had the chance to visit it a few years ago, back when I lived in the US, and the view from the receiver room is stunning. Although I must admit that looking down through the mesh floor was... "an experience" 😵‍💫 😅

Oh dear lord is it actually still Monday? I had so many good conversations today with old friends and collaborators, and yelled about satellites to a room full of astronomers to try to encourage them to take action, and didn't completely melt down in a big city.

Almost have a public website ready to go with more satellite regulation advocacy info, hopefully will get it (at least bare bones version) before my public talk tomorrow!!

@Chrislintott

As I'm unable to Quote Post this, I'll just say here that this article is worth reading.

If you're a little put out that you missed the aurora display on Saturday, it's worth noting that "Exact timing and strength of [aurora] is hard to predict, but their frequency follows the eleven-year cycle of solar activity... As we head into the period of solar maximum predicted for the next year or so, such events should be common."

If you haven't already, DL an aurora app now.

The one I use is really for the UK (AuroraWatch UK), but I'd imagine there's others for countries worldwide 👍

It's worth a look on wherever you get your apps from.

An incomplete list of inappropriate comments I received from my male colleagues recently:

  • You look furious.
  • You have a quiet voice. A woman from Ukraine in our department also has a quiet voice.
  • You look nervous.
  • You gave me an angry look at the elevator and I didn't dare to discuss a project with you.
  • You are so modest.
  • You don't have to get so confrontational.

They reduce our professional interactions to an imaginary emotional state of mine.

Do men talk like this to each other?

grb090423, (edited )

In a word... NO!

No they don't. I don't know why they feel they have to do this to women. Do they think it's being nice somehow?

I really don't understand but it makes my blood boil.

And for others reading this, please note the word in the OP - incomplete. 😠

Started boiling some Weißwurst without realising I'm all out of sweet mustard, and stores are closed today. Should I...
(a) Go out and buy mustard in a gas station.
(b) Use sriracha, the only other sauce I happen to have at home right now, and risk being deported from Germany.

The Eta Aquarids meteor shower, although it peaked on the 6th May, is still happening and will continue until 28th May (associated with Comet Halley). Could've been that.
