You know on the Internets when you describe something that you've actually got expertise in and then some random dude comes by and speculates on it, acting as if his opinion is somehow equally relevant to the discussion?

And then (if you're feeling generous and think they were well-meaning) when you add additional information which you would not have if it wasn't, you know, one of your areas of specialisation, they still act as if you're just coming up with random ideas and keep throwing hypotheses at you?

Don't be that dude. Keeping this non-specific because there's no point in calling anyone in particular out, it's just annoying.

Just read on the US citizenship renunciation page that you have to verify that you don't have a developmental or intellectual disability.

My daughter has been itching to dump hers since she was about 10. She's never been to the US and doesn't want to go - Hell, it's not even really safe for her to go there. She's fully intellectually competent. She's also autistic. Not that it would necessarily be clear if not disclosed and she weren't put into a situation which caused so much stress that she couldn't deal, but that is a fact.

Anyone have any experience with this? We have a couple of years to deal with it, she's not old enough to be able to do so, but she'd like to be prepared.

Oh, and by the way: the bridge guy is starting to talk about what might perhaps be a more palatable approach.

And folks aren't wrong that the very nature of how Mastodon works allows this bridge and that it's using intended functionality at the lowest layer.

But that was NEVER the problem. The problem isn't technical, it's social. If you run at people and say "hey, I built something that will make a million folks you were happily able to avoid able to contact you... (More)

grrrr_shark, (edited )
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

Technically federation IS fundamentally opt-out unless your server only runs from a whitelist - but folks, you REALLY need to understand that many of the folks upset with that know this perfectly well.

That really isn't the issue. It's that he's bridging a huge server with massive moderation issues - which scares people - and the first thing HE says is "I am doing <this thing you don't want me to do> and you will have to opt-out if you don't want it".

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

...from a platform you object to, and you are going to have to opt-out of it if you don't want that, too bad for you", can you not understand that that message and ideology would really upset people, especially marginalized folks who have been here a long time?

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

I mean, of COURSE you can block or defederate - I will defederate my server, but that is not the issue. That is a technical solution.

I think you should look at what this guy said, initially, and how he responded to those comments, and understand that he clearly did not read the room.

grrrr_shark, (edited )
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

If you can't understand why that message is a problem, or why his initial doubling-down when folks expressed concern caused anger, then you may be confusing the technical discussion with the social one.

I am glad he really is looking at ways to get consent across the bridge - I applaud that - but the way he came out of the gate with this was with a message that was rightly worthy of concern and could have been predicted to cause such a reaction.

Social problem. And that matters.

jik, to random
@jik@federate.social avatar

Look, let's say somebody forked Mastodon, added support for ads and an engagement-driven feed algorithm, and fired up a production instance.
As soon as people started signing up there, content from other servers would start showing up there and vice versa.
That's what the Bluesky bridge is.
You already don't have opt-in control over where your content goes. Anyone can federate.
The Fediverse already uses opt-out as its primary consent mechanism.
1/2

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@jik this is true, but it is also the case that this guy does not seem to understand the principle of "just because you can doesn't mean you should".

It's not a technical issue - it's a social one. Advertising "I am actively connecting everyone to the firehose yay" and then not understanding when people are upset about not just that but his attitude in doing so is the deeper problem IMHO.

Some people tell superweird, obvious and easily debunked lies. It always confuses me. I joke a lot and like to think it's obvious that I'm not being sincere. But I'm also a sort of pathological truth-teller. It drives my family mad tbh. I understand that people want to big themselves up, which I get. I'm not immune to showing off or a bit of vanity/arrogance. But I just cannot understand why people say stuff that isn't true. I'm 10ft tall and I know magic. U wot m8?

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@TheBreadmonkey You know what's funny? (My mom told this story, and I don't think it's apocryphal, because she's not really the sort.)

My grandfather (and his son, my uncle) was like this. Claimed to have done all this valiant stuff during World War II and his whole family was like, dude, we KNOW where you were. You were mostly around HERE, fixing planes.

Anyway, so after the war, while my mom was growing up, he had a mostly humdrum job for a defense contractor, and had to travel a lot.

And he had big stories about that, no doubt, but folks mostly ignored them. Because he was full of shit.

One day, though, he was supposed to come home from a business trip, and he didn't show up.

My grandma didn't worry too much - she was largely self-sufficient (problematic in other ways though) and was happier when he wasn't around.

But it got later and later, and then there was a knock at the door.

It was the FBI.

By all accounts, my grandma was a little flabbergasted, since everyone knew my grandpa was a massive bullshitter (who looked like a giant potato - this is important to the story), and she couldn't imagine what he'd do to get the FBI's attention.

He wasn't really smart enough to do anything to get the FBI's attention.

But she invited them in, and they sat down and started asking strange questions about what he'd been doing, where he was staying, who he'd been talking to.

And then they asked her, "So... how long has your husband known Miss America?"

My grandma didn't understand the question. My grandfather clearly did NOT know Miss America, and she stated that clearly.

But no, they kept at it, and then they finally said, "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but we think your husband may have run off with Miss America. They were the only two to miss the flight, and no one can find either of them."
