I hate Ayn Rand. But you can read whatever you want. I don't care.

If someone judged me by what I read they'd think I was fey.

Now telling Greek mythology stories and listening to

Daedalus, according to Greek Mythology is the founder of carpentry, father of Icarus, and a renowned craftsman and inventor, among other things.

After attempting to murder his nephew in a bout of jealousy by trying to throw him down from The Acropolis, he fled Athens and found refuge in Crete.
The King of Crete, King Minos, welcomed him, hoping to employ his extraordinary craftsman skills.

In other news, Poseidon, god of the sea, was keen for some good, old fashioned animal sacrifice. He gifted a bull to King Minos to sacrifice, but the King thought he’d keep this awesome specimen, and instead sacrificed a less impressive bull from his own stock. Poseidon lost his shit, as Greek gods often did, and put a curse on the Kings wife, Pasiphaë, that would cause her to lust for the Bull he had gifted her husband.

So Daedalus turns up and the queen asks him to build a cow suit.
And he does.
So she does.
And then Pasiphaë gives birth to the Minotaur, half man, half bull.

King Minos loses his shit this time, as the Kings of Ancient Greece often did, and ordered Daedalus to build the Labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur. Then, Daedalus, and his son Icarus were themselves imprisoned in a tower, as they would not be allowed to leave with knowledge of the queens escapades and the Labyrinth.

It was here, in the prison tower, that Daedalus would build the wings for Icarus and himself, and conceived plans to escape the tower and fly away from Crete, across the sea, to freedom.

Icarus looked over his wings, as his father, Daedalus, tightened the leather straps that held them on.

They had been planning this moment for months. They’ve been collecting the feathers, treating their candle wax, building the wings and keeping them concealed from the guards. Daedalus, now double-checking the straps of his own wings, indicated to Icarus to ascend the final flight of stairs to the tower roof, and followed behind him, carefully making sure their wings don’t catch on anything.

The sun was high. Icarus squinted as they came onto the roof. The ocean sparkled as the breeze rippled the water. Icarus could hear the waves faintly beneath the sounds of the guards enjoying their lunch below. They’ll be distracted, unlikely to look up from their food.

Daedalus turns his son to face him. Suddenly a guitar riff is playing. Icarus is concerned that the guards have discovered their scheme. Fear fills his eyes. Daedalus holds him firm, nodding slightly to the beat of the riff.

His father breaks into song, and Icarus realises he’s in a musical.

Listen to this song, a song about the advice Daedalus gives his son, Icarus, before continuing with the thread.

🎆 EXCITING STUFF!!! 🎆

The first customer just signed up for 🍾

@shoq just created a server on . He has some more configuring to do, but his server is fully operational!

He's also planning on running multiple servers with as well!

We'll be inviting more customers to very soon!

So do you have a very low cost single user option. I don't want one but it seems like a cool niche.

Hi Fediverse admins / devs! I've got a question about instance software.

Up until now, I've been running a fork of glitch-soc that has served me well. Unfortunately, however, I'm starting to run up against some of Mastodon's limitations and the effort to maintain my own fork is just too much. (seriously, fuck Rails and especially Webpacker :blobfoxangry:) I'd like to switch instance software to something with more features out-of-the-box. I'm considering Calckey, but I don't have any experience with it or any other Misskey derivative. The feature set looks great on paper but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually run it (or at least seriously evaluated the software). I'd greatly appreciate any and all input! I'm especially curious about these questions:

  1. Can I migrate my account from a Mastodon-based instance? Yes, this is supported.
  2. How are the moderation features? I make heavy use of domain suspensions and even the occasional IP ban. Moderation features don't quite match Mastodon, but are sufficient for good moderation.
  3. Both glitch-soc and Calckey support Markdown, but different variants. How does that work in practice? Does formatting break? Markdown is generally compatible, but calckey offers additional markdown.
  4. How's the security track record for Calckey / Misskey?
  5. Has anyone contributed or forked the codebase? Is it difficult to start a local dev environment? (not planning to fork, but I like to keep my options open.) The codebase has many individual contributors and forks.
  6. The "Fediverse Software Comparison" table has a few mistakes in the Mastodon and glitch-soc columns. They're minor, but it makes me wonder if that table is really trustworthy? The table is based on personal knowledge
  7. Are there any major compatibility issues with other instances? Minor differences are fine and unavoidable, but if there's a big limitation or something then I'd like to know about it. Federation works with any software that supports secure fetch.

Any other thoughts or feedback would also be wonderful. Thanks so much!

@hazel

I am moving my outdated Oxwall social network to Calckey.

I chose Calckey because of the Galleries and Pages (blogs). Besides the timeline these are essential features at Gamer+.

Both of these features are immature, especially galleries. RSS support is only available for profiles now but shouldn't be hard to implement for galleries and pages.

I'm buying into the future which isn't too bad on an open source platform.

Sorry I couldn't help with your other questions. I have them too.

That's me. Compulsive proofreader. If I happen on a typo in a post over a year old I want to fix it. I usually don't but I want to.

    It just happened!

    https://misskey.io overtook https://mastodon.online!

As tabulated by FediDB, it is now the 5th largest Fediverse server!

This is quite symbolic because, for the first time, 's flagship server now has more users than one of 's flagship servers!

I got a account and it seems pretty straightforward. I love the Galleries and would definitely use that. Is there a blog feature or some other way to present longer articles?

    Thanks

    Teacher: Absolutely fucking not.
