My detailed trial report.

It's fine, but I don't think that I need any of the things it does that Mastodon doesn't do (although I could have done with real italics there).

I hope you enjoyed my review.

@Triffen @goodthinking @scrbblns I thought it was /italic/ bold underline ?

Well if it isn't cryptocurrency spam coming from the biggest, open instance on the . 👀

I wonder if this is at all related to challenges with moderating an instance of checks notes 200k active accounts? Or with moderating new accounts on the only instance actively promoted in the official apps? :thinking_rotate:

Thankfully we can always defederate! What's that? It's the biggest instance so there are real concerns about a lot of people losing connections? Whodda thunk it!

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@mastodonmigration @rysiek ... on a tanget here: once de-federated, if they clean up their problem, will inertia keep them de-federated many places? I believe so. The sharing of block-lists should be accompanied by re-federation-lists

bluesky failed an important vibe check for me last night: there was essentially no posting

not sure if it's just not very queer-leaning, or massively weighted towards people in the US

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@Sinjo Don't need to be queer-leaning, just open to some campiness and a bit of low-brow humour. Still makes it a pretty good indicator to call it a strike against bluesky.

Absolutely shocked by the result. Finland absolutely should have won.

Though this is going to be entertaining to watch Sweden who seems to be absolutely off her face wasted try to perform.

@wild1145 No need to worry it seems. :) . Wrong winner, but she nailed that.

For some reason, I got a ton (or at least several ounces) of people asking me about Faraday bags for phones the last couple days.

While I’m not in the Faraday bag testing business, you might find this writeup I did a couple years ago helpful, mainly to explore how you can think about what Faraday bags do and don’t do and how to measure them. Go science!

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@mattblaze Interesting link.
On the tin-foil home-made ones, I suspect direct contact between the device and the conductive faraday cage will be bad. I've used the cookie tin trick on an apple remote that was misbehaving, and had some succes in first wrapping it in an insulator before sticking it in the tin. Would be interesting to see the experiment repeated with, say first some bubble-wrap and then a double layer of aluminium foil.

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@mattblaze OK, showing my ignorance here. Impressive difference between the commercial solutions and the cookie-tin.

just announced their next social media venture: .

Perspectives is a tab that will showcase social media posts in their search results. This will give -- you guessed it -- "perspectives" on current events and other matters as well.

While Google is positioning this generating results from all social media, this also has massive implications for the .

I've been saying for a long time that if we Fediverse developers didn't nail search soon, Google will eat our lunch.

Well, it looks like they've just set down at a table and are studying the menu right now -- because I completely expect that the Fediverse will be present on that Perspective tabs, especially since the Fediverse is now generating 1 billion+ posts each month.

What is the next logical step for Google?

If I were putting on my Google product development hat, I'd push for full text search with near-instant results. This is very easy for Google to do. Their engineers could probably build it fast.

Meanwhile, the Fediverse is practically giving away Fediverse search to Google -- Google is what most people use to find posts on the Fediverse right now.

Are we just going to allow Google to extend their search monopoly into the Fediverse, and without a fight too?

hakona,

@leadore @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews It stands to reason that if the search in the server (and consequently in the apps) is good, then it will be used, so google will not be able to insert itself in the equation.

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@leadore @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews The text in the fediverse will be available to Google, but the users interacting with said text through search would not be. They would not be able to sell ad-space on fedisearches. They would not be able to analyze search trends. They would not be able to map you as a fediverse-user to their data on users.

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@45xiatai @leadore @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews I'm talking about the value of "good" that makes it the preferred way to search the fediverse, above Google. Anything less would not make sense as a way of keeping Google at arms length.

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@45xiatai @leadore @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews Sorry about the snark, what I mean is we've all been there, using Google with site:<mumble>, so yes, getting search good enough to matter is obviously hard, bearing in mind a random instance might not have all the ram and cpu that Google has, but it should be a goal. Your results will vary depending on your home-instance. Keeping search in Mastodon dumbed-down on purpose is wrong IMO.

hakona,
@hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

@dumbo @45xiatai @leadore @atomicpoet @fediversenews @socialmedianews Someone already thought of that. https://tootfinder.ch/ It obviously needs to be opt-in for the people getting indexed, but tootfinder is a bit to de-coupled from the day-to-day fediverse usage to really work. Could have som integration into clients? I'm sceptical.

i've been speaking with some other cis-gay men who are mastodon administrators, and I find it interesting that Oliphant's council doesn't seem to represent this group. this probably explains why being a gay sex positive instance is still considered a blockable offense. turtle.garden needs to be removed from this aggregate.

I'm using "tier0-council" from [1]. How does that list fare in your view?

I'm also wondering, if I happened to import a list that was too broad, how do I clean house to only block what is in the list I'm importing at the moment?

Meta’s ActivityPub-enabled Twitter competitor is moving ahead.

The project is called “Barcelona”.

It will be its own independent app, and it’s being pitched as “Instagram for your thoughts”.

How do you feel about Meta joining the Fediverse?

Here’s a screenshot of Barcelona.

@peterkal @atomicpoet @fediversenews Google is your friend (until it's not)
https://xmpp.org/ . Open instant messaging protocol. There was a time you could use any compliant instant-messaging app to send (Facebook) "messenger" messages. So, some people built up a network og contacts, and used it WITHOUT logging in to the facebook app/web-page. Suddenly pidgin and other chat clients were unable to authenticate, and you HAD to use Facebook to receive/send messages.

Feels like the freedom to not get shot for ringing the wrong doorbell and the freedom to not live in so much fear that you shoot anyone who rings your doorbell would be exponentially more valuable than the freedom to own guns.
