When you make a REALLY wrong turn. It appears that the car's occupants exited, and you'll note the train immediately started emergency braking, but it takes a LONG time to stop a train like that. Accidents like this seem not to be extremely rare at these kinds of crossings, especially at night. Also note that the train didn't just keep on going like at the end of "Back to the Future III" when a train slams into the DeLorean and just continues on its way. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHUV9IQatQA

    AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

    Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

    Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

    Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

    AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

    Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

    In norway our "carrier of last resort" has been allowed to end copper on the condition that all subscribers have acceptable cellular and fiber coverage. Whoever "wins the tender" to be "carrier of last resort" should obviously face similar conditions, but keeping copper indefinitely is not the way to go I think.

    hakona,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @lauren @alanthecampbell It's worth noting here that most (all?) medical alert systems & assistive technologies are installed and run by municipalities, so they are in the loop with the telco as the land-lines are phased out.

    One other crucial point about the SMTP SMUGGLING exploit. This is a TWO SERVER exploit. That is, for example, if you run a small mail server that has the bug in question, and you DON'T forward inbound emails to OTHER SERVERS that DON'T have the bug, the impact is much more minimal.

    The issue is that the bug lets an attacker input an email into your (with the bug) server that when FORWARDED to a server without the bug could trick it into treating that email as more than one actual email message, including forged ones that will not be detected by DMARC/DKIM/SPF, and could be delivered to users on that second system as if separate legitimate emails.

    On the other hand, if such an attack email was simply delivered locally on your (with the bug) system, it will most likely look like more than one email text all strung together in one message, with SMTP commands embedded within the text. A comparatively obvious giveaway that something is wrong.

    Bottom line, like I said before, inspect carefully EVERY email that you receive. There are all manner of email domain forgery and non-domain forgery scam techniques that use throwaway and other domain tricks and methods, and SMTP SMUGGLING is just one of the entire creepy collection.

    hakona,
    @hakona@im.alstadheim.no avatar

    @lauren I'd like to see a list of software with/without "the bug".

    Itโ€™s hard not to say โ€œAIโ€ when everybody else does too, but technically calling it AI is buying into the marketing. There is no intelligence there, and itโ€™s not going to become sentient. Itโ€™s just statistics, and the danger they pose is primarily through the false sense of skill or fitness for purpose that people ascribe to them.

    The test for success would be pitting the model against Boris Johnson, an interrogator should not be able to distinguish the two. One benefit of this goal is that training would be heavily skewed towards classics, so mostly out of copyright

    One of the things that drives me crazy is the people who are constantly saying we need to go back to our roots, eat, sleep, and live like Amazon tribes or Neanderthals. If you do any research at all, this is just a ridiculous concept. Especially when you the are also encouraging people to reject modern medicine in favor of "natural" medicine. Now I understand that our current modern medical establishments are rife with issues, and I'm not denying or excusing that. But let's just address basics, life expectancy, only about 20% of Neanderthals made it past 40 years of age, and the average life expectancy for modern Amazonian tribes is 53 years. Being that I am now 42, I'd like to live a little longer than that, and the reason I can is MODERN MEDICINE, access to clean water, good and plentiful food, living indoors when it's too cold or hot, working jobs that aren't as physically demanding. Telling people that if they go back to some kind of traditional past lifestyle, that they will live a healthier happier lifestyle is a falsehood and a dangerous one. Get medical advice from a medical professional, who bases their research on science, not some person on YouTube who bases their ideas on things that seem true to them.

    First exit poll results of Polish elections are available, and based on these it looks like PiS might not remain in power, which would be good news. Let's wait for official results though!

    About 73% of eligible voters voted. That is massive and phenomenal. Probably best result in any elections in since 1989. ๐ŸŽ‰

    But two things I am mainly interested in are:

    • the result of Konfederacja, the far-right libertarians

    • how many people voted in the referendum part of this election cycle
