I’m not sure that this is the move. This whole Automattic thing could have just been a nonprofit if you’re that hard-up for money, damn.

What’s going on with layoffs at news publications, even non-profits like @TexasObserver, shows that there has to be a better paradigm to sustainably publish and edit the news. Non-profit news outlets may have more sustainable expectations, but the conversation can’t stop at the question of profit.

States having their own side-militias which can’t be federalized is pretty wild lol.

Also learning that ’s State Guard is large enough to have ground, maritime and air components, as well as a joint medical command. It’s all unpaid, but you do get free tuition for public college. No age limit.

Air 2 Ultra is an affordable alternative to the " if you are:

  • a developer
  • always wired up to a computer or smartphone and have either a or Samsung Galaxy S22/S23 for anything beyond mirroring the tethered device’s screen
  • only interested in displaying things right in front of your eyes since it has a comically narrow 52º field of vision

That's "compromised beyond comparison," not "affordable.”

@mjgardner OTOH, I could see this as being the only true AR glasses which could be used for assistive and navigative purposes outside of home/office/enclosed space, if that is in the intended/supported range of use.

If I’m right, that would be a big change, even for spatial external displays like these, straddling the fence between AR headsets and assistive glasses like . It would also mean that we may have to live with this for now.

@mjgardner I’m assuming that’s a temporary marketing hedge for them to build their App Library first before they call it ready for consumer marketing. Same with the XReal Light product page, even though it’s been out since 2021. I don’t think the label applies to what apps are available for either.

@mjgardner agreed on that. I’m just fascinated that we’re this close to true AR smartglasses after all this time.

@IceCubesApp Beautiful! Although, would it be possible to have one’s followed hashtags appear in the menu, perhaps by default or as a drawer that you swipe to in the menu? And is it possible to make it multi-select, or is that something you’d rather make happen through tag groups instead?

There has to be a better, shorter way to say “party list proportional representation” in five syllables or less. Ideas:

  • ranked slate voting
  • instant slate voting
  • slate choice voting
  • member slate voting

Problem is that I’m trying to find a shorter term which applies strictly to legislative elections. The use of the word “slate” can apply to any office, and I need to distinguish legislative elections from others.

should be more of a thing.

Finally! The EU has found a legal way of supporting Ukraine, circumventing the Hungarian blockade, using special rules introduced under the pandemic.

This means an end to the veto blockade from Putin's Hungarian helper, Victor Orbán.

@accretionist @zout @randahl a quibble: the Netherlands uses party-list proportional representation, which is a more “pure” form of proportional representation than in that you’re voting for party slates, not individuals. But your point about the left being divided is definitely correct, no matter the election system. It’s just worse by far in FPTP systems like the US, UK or Canada. I’d personally rather have in part or in full tbh
