So with my homelab computer, I want to have it so that it stays on during the day, and then at night it will hibernate. Do any of the desktop environments allow you to set this up? Or is there a tool out there that will let me schedule power management in this way?

healthiswealth,
@healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Hi. What OS does your home lab run? Is it a PC or laptop?

healthiswealth,
@healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I know Gnome's power management (in Ubuntu at least) has an Automatic Suspend feature but this only appear to be able to do it up to 2 hours of inactivity. I'm assuming OpenSuse has the same or similar? Ever thought about setting up a crobjob using the 'systemctl hibernate' command? You should be able to set the crojob to run whenever you need it to, i.e. every night at 10pm. I may test this out myself to see if it works. Ive never had to but can try... everyday is a school day :)

@actuallyautistic Wanted to share this little life saving, cheap device for anyone else with temperature sensing and regulating issues.

Did you know temperature can increase in some cases by up to 8ยฐC before an autistic person may be able to detect the shift?

After long years of confusion I realised this issue of delayed detection applies to me.

Now I have this in sight all day, and as soon as it goes over my comfortable threshold of 24C I know to take action.

healthiswealth,
@healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic Great find! I'm not autistic but I love to learn so I'm at least aware. I'll give the article a read, thanks for sharing! :)

    @Gina Good point! Hadn't thought about this to be honest. But then again I got fed up with the amount of ads and pop ups as well as the 'unbelievable' amount of cookies and permissions needed to visit many sites I reverted to using RSS readers for my daily intake of sites that I visit daily (NewsFlash on Ubuntu, Feeder on GraphineOS Pixel and Newsbeuter at the Linux terminal). The Reader view is a great option for those ad-hoc sites I need to visit, thanks! :)

    @davx5app @foxy @stepan Hi. I've just installed DAVx5 again (have a new phone) and was looking at the suggested ICSx5 so I can keep up to date with sporting fixtures which some sites provide as .ICS files. Do you recommend installing it or holding fire until its implemented into DAVx5?

    @davx5app @foxy @stepan OK thank you. And thank you for all your hard work putting these apps together. I always donate when I can to the developers of the apps I use. It is 'very much' appreciated!!

    Afternoon Swim

    What is it with people wanting to swim in freezing cold water on a freezing cold day these days?

    healthiswealth,
    @healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Dave2022 Great photo! (I must visit one day). People have been cold swimming forever really. Its really good for the immune system and certainly wakes you up, gets the blood flowing for sure and you feel great afterwards. In recent 'internet years' Wim Hoff has helped promote it further. The main bit of advice is to start gradually and build up to it. It can be very dangerous if done without experience and without anyone else on hand to help if you get into trouble.

    healthiswealth,
    @healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Dave2022 :) Yeah that's true. Certainly since the pandemic started for sure. I've walked lots (mainly Wales) and even noticed walking paths being worn down faster than usual due to the increased footfall. Its great more people are getting out of course but there can be knock on effects like that unfortunately. Have you noticed this where you walk? There was an article about it (Pen Y Fan in Wales) which was quite good... Whether I can find it is another matter :)

    This maybe an easy one for others to answer... Does each instance have its own character limit? Fosstodon has 500 but some posts from other instances are huge and I have to scroll through the text on my phone to get to the end. I don't have that much I need to say (in one post anyway) but I'm interested to know the answer. Thanks!

    healthiswealth,
    @healthiswealth@fosstodon.org avatar

    @kev Thanks for replying! Yes, that's what I thought it would be, so each instance can set their own limit. I don't need more than 500 but good to know these things. Thanks again :)

    @heyheymomo I've never been but I've read several articles that say its great for open water swimming. I don't if that interests you or not? I used to follow a photographer (on Twitter) who swims and takes amazing photos, who I believe is based there: https://seastudio.ie/ Have a great trip! Safe travels.

    @AmiW This is a 'photo'?! It's normally a compliment to say a painting looks so real it looks like a photograph but I'd argue the other way around for this one. The colours are amazing! It looks like a classic oil painting :)
