🆕 blog! “An adult gap year?”

I've got about another 10 months left at my current job and after that... I don't know what I'll do. I've already moved down to 4 days a week in an effort to glide down to FIRE. Do I really want to go back up to 5 days? Could I find somewhere that would be […]

@Edent Do the sabbatical! And afterwards, find an employer that offers a 4-day workweek (or ask for it early in the interview process – worked for me). Companies and organizations are slowly warming up to the idea that the 4-day workweek is working well (especially if they want to hire good people), and that people take sabbaticals and other breaks from their burnout-prone jobs. From an artist's point of view, is there any difference between you buying a donated CD from a charity shop and downloading pirated music from a torrent site?

Neither gives the artists, songwriters, producers, publishers, or distributors any money.

Neither reports to a charts authority to show popularity.

Both have the same impact on secondary revenue like gig tickets & merchandise.

Vote now - and please show your workings.

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent That feels almost like a trick question, because there’s currently barely any good “official” way to support artists, aside from buying stuff directly from them (Bandcamp, merch from their website, etc.). Let’s not pretend that Spotify & Co. are in any way good for artists at the end of the day.

Oooohkay. There's a thing in Germany called Kinderturnen. It's like baby gymnastics, I suppose. Often like an obstacle course.

Anyway, one boy is chasing another using a rope like a whip. The younger, smaller boy is crying out. I give chase and get the bigger boy to stop whipping him.

He's like "it's my brother?" and I'm like "so? Doing that hurts!" then, their father tells me again that they're brothers, and it's up to him to deal with them, not me. I'm like, ok.

@sarajw It sounds like you did the right thing! I could imagine that the dad was just not very good at dealing with this (potentially embarrassing) situation, and maybe his reaction was therefore unnecessarily hostile/dismissive. 🤷‍♂️ Either way: I’m sorry this happened to you!

I'll be speaking, together with folks from Rasa and Outerbounds.

@ines @pyconde Oh wow, this is the first time I’m seeing someone use the Luma events platform! I had the impression it’s some crypto-related nonsense that won’t survive for long. But I guess you’re also not the creator of the event on Luma, right?

Wow whee - just got an email from to say that my yearly subscription price changed from $30 to $50.

Crazy stuff. I get that inflation is a thing; but the site is entirely user contributed data - from the scrobbling of the tracks to editing data and uploading images and links in the database.

And they sell that data to other companies. And haven’t updated their website or apps in so, so, long. The whole thing is pretty much in maintenance mode.

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@matt @okwithmydecay I received an email regarding the price increase last Friday. And, to be fair, they did build some new features around monthly/yearly listening reports. But I also agree that it’s hard to justify the new price. :/

@dansup @pixelfed I think it’s helpful to have them shown in this new button style!
I’d also suggest increasing the line height of the description text. Currently, it’s very tight which doesn’t look great, and makes reading multiline descriptions harder.

Best password manager? Thoughts appreciated!

@Daojoan 1Password has great UX, but I personally use @bitwarden because it’s open source, free and close enough to 1Password’s features and UX. ✌️

TIL that DHL is an American company, founded in San Francisco in 1969, and that it was acquired by Deutsche Post between 1998 and 2002, which then started using the DHL brand for all its parcel services.

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@brunoph I’m also always confused about who currently owns/manages it. But I guess the bottom line is that it’s a terribly-managed corporation that only cares about squeezing every last US/EU cent out of its services.

what do you wish to see for in 2024?

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@kepano The mobile (iOS) experience is still quite confusing. It’s never clear to me how to manage tabs and which button will display the sidebar. Perhaps the menus could be cleaned up a bit and there could be more ways added to close/manage tabs?

Does Apple Music's UI suck? Or do all music apps follow a set of conventions I'm unfamiliar with because I just haven't used any before now? (Or both?)

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@collinsworth Apple Music’s (desktop) client is generally very strange, super buggy and a weird Frankenstein’s monster made out of different technologies. The mobile app is more stable, but also has some very unintuitive UI/UX behaviors. It’s astonishing that they’re not better at building a music player.

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@kevinteljeur @collinsworth One feature that seems to get worse across Apple Music and Spotify (since you mentioned “playlists”) is the handling of favorites. I’m very close to migrating back to my own mp3 collection to have simple things like that working again (although I haven’t looked into mobile clients for that yet).

Dear YouTube music. What the hell are you doing?

What the fuck is the use case for comments on tracks in an audio app that's basically only open briefly to pick an album?

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@tante I have the impression all streaming services just get worse and overloaded with unnecessary features automatically over time.
Nice song choice though! 👌

Everyone is so salty here about Meta. I've been online my whole life, I'm ok giving away some privacy for services.I know it's not only public posts, but you know, an iOS app won't simply steal your data. Threads is not uploading all my photos, threads is not locating me, threads is not accessing my health data. Sure the privacy sheet is ugly. But iOS give you control.

To be honest tho, I don't give a fuck. If I wanted to be off the grid I would not have a phone or be on Mastodon.

herrherrmann,
@herrherrmann@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian In my opinion it’s not about being “off the grid” or “having nothing to hide” but about (even just indirectly) supporting a terrible company that constantly does deeply immoral things and is contributing to a lot of terrible things in today’s society. It’s your right to not care but please don’t forget that you’re not the only person around. ✌️
