They deserve the Congressional Medal of Freedom.

They literally rescued the election by securing the box containing the election certifications from each state & getting it away from the insurrectionists.

I think of all the photos I've seen from that day this is one of the most powerful of all.

Thank you Ladies.

@RushGirl @mcnado I wanted to boost this so I reverse Google image searched first to check the veracity. It’s an image of the votes being carried into the chamber, not out, before the rioters got in. Still, these women’s roles are a vital part of our democracy. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/laurenstrapagiel/viral-photo-of-senate-chamber-assistants-is-incorrect

Oh my gosh, the newest build has a bug in one of the most important features, composing a new post.

The bug?

A fucking typo.

So sorry about this, will be pushing a new build shortly.

Edit: Fix has been shipped, the APK sha256 is 2f1efe5a7202cc7d102223197e29c0278532977b7e205e9f82888e4ab989c1c4

So I have and suspect I am too. I am feeling particularly overwhelmed at the moment and although exercise helps, I am struggling to manage it. Running is a favourite, but it's actually all the stuff I have to do to get ready for a run that gets in the way. My brain hates it. Any tips from those in the know for making that easier? Is there a way to streamline this process?

Another day of trying to trick my brain into cooperating sigh

holly,
@holly@v.st avatar

@kristiedegaris Everyone says to set stuff out the night before, but I can never remember to do that. One thing that does help is having a checklist for all the things I need so that I can check them off as I find/do them. Having a running buddy also helps if you're the kind of person who needs accountability.

🤔 Do bicycles create empathy? Or do people that care about other people, tend to care about bikes?

Why is there such a big overlap between "bike infrastructure radicalized people," and "people that care about people that are different than themselves?"

Why is there such a low overlap between "people with trash hateful takes" and "people that want more bike infrastructure?"

holly,
@holly@v.st avatar

@mekkaokereke Well it turns out, in a society where there is bike infrastructure everywhere, the racists also bike.

    @mollyquell So, is this the end of Rutte? Do they do another election? I don’t think this was covered in the inburgering exam so I’m full of questions.

    Non-algorithmic, human-focused social networks like us here and algorithmic, ad-focused, influencer-friendly networks like Twitter, Threads and BlueSky can happily coexist, IMHO.

    It's not us v them.

    The fediverse has grown over many years. It will continue to do so. Let the other networks try their thing and let us focus on ours.

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @jwildeboer @cdnchris I think people are understandably scared, but I think their fears are unfounded. Zuck is not some business god. He created one thing that panned out, and then he bought two that were already successful (Insta & WhatsApp). With Meta they clearly didn’t bother to research any existing social VR spaces, and launched with problems others had thoughtfully designed against from the beginning. They’re all hubris and hype, and I don’t think that’s enough.

    helenczerski, to random

    It’s not “a car” though, is it? It’s an SUV - a two tonne lump of metal with an incredibly powerful engine that is completely unnecessary in an urban environment.

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @veronica @helenczerski The problem is the financial incentives currently go the other way, at least in the US. SUVs have lower safety and emissions standards, so car companies want to push all the vehicles they make into that class. 🙁 Here’s a video on it: https://youtu.be/jN7mSXMruEo

    @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    One problem I have with ADHD and ASD as labels is the final "D". Our ways of being are not "Disorders", any more than being gay is a "Disorder". If anything, our societies have a "Disorder", whose symptoms include chronic failure to nurture and leverage the talents and abilities of neurodiverse people for the public good.

    #neurodiversity #ADHD #autistic

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @me @strypey Exactly. What part of not being able to complete projects for myself is not a disorder? What part of forgetting my keys and locking myself out again is not a disorder? What part of hyperfocusing until my joints ache and I'm low blood sugar is not a disorder? What part of not being able to follow a conversation with someone I care about because my brain keeps switching channels is not a disorder? It's hard enough getting access to treatment, please stop implying we don't need it :(

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @strypey @me It's a bit as if you were in pain and someone said to you .. awesome, now you have the superpower of empathy! Your problem is everyone isn't accomodating your pain.

    Like, no, my problem is you're dimishing my pain, making others think I don't need help.

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @strypey @me You were speaking about . You did not mention intellectual giftedness at all.

    As someone with ADHD, hearing people talk about how it's some sort of superpower feels dimishing and ableist. There are times when we can think outside the box, etc., but that does not make up for the misery of not being able to think clearly or feel in control of your own thought processes. And clarity of thought has nothing at all to do with the external world.

    holly,
    @holly@v.st avatar

    @strypey @me The thing I have a problem with specifically is ditching the label "disorder". I was diagnosed at 41. Until then the labels I lived with were lazy, unreliable, uncaring. Once someone slapped that blessed label disorder on my forehead I was finally able to leave behind the depression and low self-worth from carrying the other labels, and I was finally able to escape the decades-long struggle to prove the other labels weren't true.

    Hey everyone,

    American Fietser on Mastodon will no longer be an active account. My Twitter is still in use, but my efforts and hopes will be going with Bluesky.

    If any of you ever come over to the Bluesky platform, I'd be happy to see you there.

    We are slowly, but surely getting more of your favorite urbanist content creators and community members over there one at a time.

I share your videos with friends and fam and on forums whenever infrastructure comes up. I left algorithmic social media after trying mastodon years ago and learning that I don’t have to endure the toxic outrage BS that algorithmic social media pushed at me, nor support the poisoning of my society caused by it. I’m here, and only here, to stay.

    @jon Hey, when you’re done with trains can you do ferries?? We’re trying to avoid flying and are going from Amsterdam to Ibiza. Rail portion of the trip went great, but the Barcelona to Ibiza ferry has been a mess and we haven’t even boarded yet. If you look up reviews of GNV and Trasmed you can get a taste of the misery, but here’s the absurd bit.. they’re going to make us take a BUS to that boat outside across the street.

    I'm still not talking about Black history. I'm still talking about white US history.

    Q: Why do Black kids not do well in school? Is it because their dads are uninvolved and uncaring parents? Bill Cosby and Herschel Walker told me that, and they are good and wise men that we should listen to! It's Black dads' fault! Boo Black men!

    A: No. Black kids only do poorly in school in extremely racist countries.

    holly,

    @mekkaokereke This is a great thread! I grew up in Louisiana and had very few black teachers. But my middle school Louisiana history teacher was black, and she had us watch Roots. I think this was a stroke of genius because I don't remember that much of Louisiana history, but I do remember Roots!
