vis.social question: All of TVCG should count for the Vis category on CSrankings, no?

https://github.com/emeryberger/CSrankings/issues/7153

It doesn't seem to make sense to add each edition of the journal in piecemeal as people make PRs

A caterpillar is a tree
that reduces to a path
when pruning all leaf nodes."

What's everybody's favorite documentation poetry?

I won the 2024 Northeastern College of Computer Sciences PhD service award! Feeling so honored to have had an opportunity to work with faculty over the past year on their NSF CAREER grant proposals, and serve on program committees for altVIS, VISxAI, HCxAI, SciPy, CSCW, and soon also VISAP 🥰

Idk who needs to hear this but if you're trying to use port 5000 on your and it's not working since your last update... It's because AirPlay silently hijacked that port in the Monterey update. You can disable AirPlay in settings to get it back 🥴

Not sure what to do with your used eclipse glasses? Astronomers without Borders is collecting gently used pairs via these locations to send to other parts of the world for upcoming eclipses!

When writing code, do you start with an ontology / function call graph / other diagram? Or does it emerge from your code as you move classes and functions out of a notebook and into a module?

Reminder to @ieeevis full paper authors, the abstract deadline is TOMORROW (Thursday) -- you can't submit a paper without first submitting an abstract!

A great reminder from @ieeevis about why you should review. It's also valuable experience to see the process 'from the other side' https://ieeevis.org/year/2024/blog/vis-2024-OPC-blog-cost-of-submission

Someone asked a question about the problem of publishing "least publishable units" of papers, referred to by Michael Ernst as "salami slicing". I agree that atomizing a research process can be substandard, but there's another end of the spectrum... the Guiness World Record Sandwich of paper. So I made a meme to illustrate the spectrum 😅

My dad is having his first job interview in more than 30 years and hooh boy is there so much knowledge about video calling technology and etiquette that I just took for granted 😳 Like, I can't explain why, but calling into an interview in portrait mode feels so casual / unprofessional... but his computer is so old that the only usable webcam he has is an iPad, and landscape mode on the iPad means it's hard to look into the camera on the side while talking 🙃 Wish him luck!

Our paper just won "Best Paper Engaged in Quantitative Description on an Under-studied Phenomenon" from JQDM for 2023! 🏆 I'm no longer in work, but it's still dear to my heart, and this paper was a blast :) Spoiler: We learned a whole lot about

"Fame and Ultrafame: Measuring and comparing daily levels of ‘being talked about’ for United States’ presidents, their rivals, God, countries, and K-pop."

My last employer UVM is hiring a FT lecturer in communication design! I absolutely loved working for this university, the employer benefits matching and healthcare are excellent, and you can take courses for free :) Plus, Burlington is the perfect mix of lil city surrounded by heavenly nature. Was really hard for me to leave here to go do my PhD, and I still visit often 🏞️ Worth checking out if you're looking to in

@janeadams@vis.social avatar

Sometimes in academia, people use the term "open source" to mean that the code is publicly available. To many in the community, "open source" means a lot more.

  1. What should we call prototype research code that accompanies a paper that is made public?

  2. What should research code include, at bare minimum, when shared publicly? (README, docstrings, requirements..)

  3. What is the minimum to actually make something "open source", beyond just publicly posting?

I've been accepted to Northeastern University for graduate school.... again! 😅 As I continue my #PhD in Computer Science, I'll also be taking courses in pursuit of a Graduate Certificate in #Bioinformatics, concurrent to my computer science dissertation on #datavisualization tools for high-dimensional data exploration. Super excited to see where this next chapter leads!

So, I'm redesigning my portfolio from scratch (moving away from Wordpress CMS), and I'd like to know others' opinions:

I was thinking it would be nice to retain some human readability in post authoring by using , so I got a markdown pipeline working (each project page dynamically renders its respective .md). But I'm in , so for some project pages I want to embed . No prob. markdown supports iframes, right? Not quite... (1/3)
