@jdmcg@mastodon.nz

I design things for a living, write things for a hobby, and advocate for improved public healthcare on behalf of people with a rare disorder.

I live by the beautiful Whau river in Tāmaki Makaurau with my lovely family where I write bad poems and cook great food, often at the same time.

I don't think that role was for me.

The political right use the term ‘woke’ in the way that communists would use the word ‘bourgeois’ to signify “things and people we don’t like and who had better watch out”.

It has the advantage of being easier to spell. That’s important give the education cuts.

I live in a world where the government is taking wheelchairs off disabled people (and claiming poverty) while paying billions to already wealthy landlords.

I cannot fathom the person who believes this is reasonable.

@NunavutBirder a movie I thought was far surpassed by its prequel, "Napolean Dynamite"

My seventy-five year old father-in-law has dinner with us each Friday. He's old school white NZ.

"Waitangi day's going to be interesting," he said tonight, "good on the Maori for sticking it to these fascists."

If he's the silent majority, and I think he is, the right might have mis-read the room.

Alright lovely Mastodon folks, time to share my fundraiser. Now I know that fundraisers are not everyone's cup of tea, so I'll share this once, then pop it behind a content warning in future. I'll be using the same hashtags so you can follow it if you like.

What am I doing? I'm raising funds for Rare Disorders NZ by walking around Maungawhau Mt Eden again and again and again, in late March. Learn more at https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/walk-a-mile-with-james

@jeffowski I spend about a day per week on average volunteering for a charity and it makes me feel greatly superior.

Seriously, though, my approach is to influence systemic factors enough, through collective action, that there is no longer any need for us to exist. I suspect we'll be in business longer than my own lifetime, but you gotta have goals.

Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."

'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"

Replace 'art' with 'writing'.

Right!

Happy writing,
Roger

@RogerRemacle @bookstodon my brother, a conspicuously smart person, said that he liked AI because it confronts us with the question of what it is we value as human work. If we value art we should not cede intellectual sovereignty to an algorithm, and neither should we hoover up the nihilistic chowder of probabilistic content. It is on us to protect what we value.

If you want to know how the 100% pure thing is going, this is how..

“They said they wanted to focus on cleaning up freshwater, boosting biodiversity, delivering for the climate, celebrating oceans, reducing waste, fixing planning laws,” says Toki. “What they’ve done is they are promulgating policy that will essentially do the opposite of all of those things.”

@Rjdlandscapes on the one hand, it infuriates me that our international reputation should be any kind of motivating factor in taking effective climate action.

On the other, I hope this provides at least some incentive for our chaotic leadership to ameliorate the worst of their inclinations.
