I have run my own mailserver since the mid-90s and I am still backing the kickstarter from @mwl for his book on how to do it. I detest how hard and how rare it is for people to do this stuff themselves and I hope the book encourages more crazy/masochistic fuckers to do it. Also I bet I'll learn something!

At Burning Man in 2000 (corrected), some friends built a giant goat. Stairs at the rear led up to the Anus of Truth, where you could ask an Oracle (one or two people sitting inside) for advice.

I was inside with another person when someone stepped up and asked the Oracle about a series of boyfriends who had all left her.

My companion said simply: It's them.

Is there an or developer hangout place that people think is useful?

(In particular I'm trying right now to figure out if there is a protocol magic I can do to make infosec.exchange stop continuously telling me about the deletion of a particular profile I have never interacted with.)

jjb,
@jjb@mastodon.social avatar

@renchap thank you! it's related but not the same -- i was trying to figure out if there is a reason the deletion of the very same user is being sent to me over and over (i haven't counted, but maybe hundreds of times by now. thousands?)

Yes, I care about the human rights of people who would hate me if they knew me, or who hate me because of who I am. That's how human rights work. It's not a gotcha to point it out.

@gvwilson if you haven't ever seen them live, i strongly recommend it -- especially if you are a musician. they blew me away with how good they were in person, especially in dynamically adjusting to each other and the audience in real time with nonexistent or subtle coordination signals. not something i expected even though i already loved their recordings.

Recently @danfuzz asked me about my cold brew coffee-making process (no he didn't) so I took some pictures and will explain.

We don't like the light and fruity flavours that seems to be typically what people go for in cold brew. This is something that gets you something more like an espresso or a long black.

Here's how we start. Four borosilicate 1L jars, a scale accurate to .1g, and 1 kilogram of coffee ground for stovetop.

I can now submit a follow request to remote servers, with digest and signature headers in the http request. Yay! But the remote servers complain that verification failed, which makes me think that the signature is incorrect.

https://pastebin.com/z3St4MQB

I do get a nice error message from mastodon.social with its version of what the signed string should be, and that matches mine, so this problem is not as simple as I wish it were.

I'd appreciate your eyeballs!

Okay, now my nascent Mastodon/ActivityPub server has advanced to the stage where I am unable to tell a remote server that I want to follow one of its users. I'm creating a Follow (I also tried "as:Follow") object, and signing it with the private key that corresponds to the user who is doing the following, the public key of which is available in the user's profile. But I'm getting a HTTP 401 (unauthorized) from the destination server.

I'm implementing (slowly) a personal Mastodon/ActivityPub server. Would someone who has done that before please tell me what is wrong with:

and
https://jeremy.org/@placeholder

...that lookups from other sites don't seem to produce the expected results?

The saddest thing about the Japanese food scene in San Francisco is that I, not a Japanese person, with no training in cooking Japanese food beyond eating it widely and frequently, probably cook better Japanese food than most (except one or two) restaurants in the city. I almost never go out to eat one of my favorite cuisines coz the selection is so inexplicably bad here. (You have to go to San Mateo for great Japanese food)
