Schuurkes' law: There are no short-term decisions in IT. The consequences of any decision will be with you longer than you expect - even if you take Schuurkes' law into account.

My main takeaway from the @rustnl conf as a test engineer who has just started their journey: these people really like their fuzz testing.

Am wondering about something: the higher you go up the org chart, the more people are used to when they say something, others do something, so the less effective their meetings become?

joeposaurus,
@joeposaurus@chaos.social avatar

@RichiH Am thinking more about the structures and formats of those meetings. Plenty of people seem to be fine if a meeting is just talking and listening. A conversation at a table. Usually those are not very effective. So I was wondering if that behavior gets rewarded more, the more authority your word has in the organization.

joeposaurus,
@joeposaurus@chaos.social avatar

@RichiH I guess I would just like to be a fly on the wall in the first board meeting ever that starts with a short mad/sad/glad retro. :-D

Wauw!

"The third alternative, which is my preference, is to recognize that the software will change over its lifetime and relax." - Alistair Cockburn giving the excellent advice to chill out when it comes to changes in "Writing Effective Use Cases". It's so broadly applicable (imo) I'm not going to share the context of his advice.

A nation bound to lose almost half its landmass to the sea just decided that the course of action they wanted to vote for is “we are afraid of people that don’t look white enough”

joeposaurus,

@romeu Not just that. Also against closing coal and gas power plants, against more wind and solar energy, etc. So we're actively going to try to get there faster.

@skinnylatte Thank you for the reminder I should finish reading Ewald Vanvugt's "Roofstaad": https://www.singeluitgeverijen.nl/nijgh-van-ditmar/boek/roofstaat/

Don't think it has any translations from Dutch, but it covers Dutch atrocities from the Crusades up to what we did in Indonesia, and closes off with some chapters how that history affects the present.

TWF you're looking through a test automation project and you decide you need to do a count of the number of asserts in the code base.

joeposaurus,
@joeposaurus@chaos.social avatar

@gdinwiddie 30 asserts in total, but 28 of those are for the tests of the framework.

Looks like most asserting is done implicitly, e.g. through Selenium locators.

For anyone unaware, Google Chrome is currently rolling out an update that track your interests based on browsing history, then share them with 3rd party websites. The notification page makes it sound like they added a new privacy feature, but in actuality they automatically enrolled you into their tracking system and you have to go and manually opt out.

joeposaurus,
@joeposaurus@chaos.social avatar

@malwaretech I'm in the EU, so I got an opt-in/opt-out screen instead of a notification one. Did take me a few seconds to realize that No, I do not want 'enhanced ad privacy'. And part of me was still slightly second-guessing that decision until I saw your post.

Here's the thing: the "original waterfall methodology paper" (which does not even use the word Waterfall) advocated for an iterative approach to software development. Unfortunately, nobody got past figure 2 of 10 and the DOD compounded the problem by turning the misconception into a standard. In other words, Agile is nothing new. It is a rediscovery borne out of not practicing RTFM.

joeposaurus,
@joeposaurus@chaos.social avatar

@absamma The Royce paper only became popular once Agile became a thing and needed something to be against. Apparently it was a paper by Boehm instead that made waterfall popular back in the day.

Based on the messages I get on LinkedIn after signaling I'm "open to work", you'd start thinking that all IT work in the Netherlands is done by contractors and consultants...

p.s. If you know of a fully remote test/quality engineer role, preferably at staff or principal level, please do get in touch. :-)

Does anyone know what "CGF" stands for? It should be something you can have a monthly discussion about.

p.s. I know I can ask the person who sent me the invite, but I figured this is more fun.
