Reddit, covering themselves in even more glory, deleting everyone’s messages from before this year.

At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, you probably shouldn’t trust other people to keep your stuff around forever, but the way did this was obviously boneheaded.

Sometimes I wonder why academics aren't stampeding from corporate social media to Mastodon, and then I remember: these are the same people that give corporations their work for free to be sold back to them at extortionate prices, and then measure their value on how often they do that.

Political geniuses they are not.

"The Madonna with the Long Neck" — 2018

Due to the religious dogma of the time, Parmigianino was unable to express his full intentions in his version of The Madonna with the Long Neck. I've fixed it for him.

For those of us who plan to federate with , we really need to do a better job of communicating to people that they will be able to interact with Threads from Mastodon, and that it is the superior choice.

Some people here are getting Threads accounts, without realising it will soon be unnecessary. People on Twitter are pretty much in the dark about the whole thing.

Enough of this meta Meta social media stuff from me today. I'm an artist and I really ought to be posting art. Here's a gouache #painting of some trees I did 23 years ago, when I was 19. There are more of these and I'm gonna toot them.

I have only just recently looked up what the difference is between a federation and a confederation: roughly, in a confederation membership is voluntary, whereas in a federation it is not.

The Fediverse is actually a confederacy…

I don’t know why I am telling you this.

"The Sacred and The Profane" — 2024

People have been speculating for a while now about what smart dinosaurs (usually Troodon) would have looked like if they had not been killed in the M/C Extinction event.
Would they be good people?

"Velociraptor mongoliensis" — 2019

A reboot of a paiting I originally did in 1997, age 16. I think at the time I considered it my first sucessful oil painting. I have added all the stuff to it that I originally intended to, but chickened-out (painting over skies in oil painting is scary,... [more]:

Does anybody know if there’s a traditional composite material that behaves something like fibreglass? As in fibre/fabric laid up in a binder of some sort to make a stiff material in arbitrary forms.

Paper mache is one but it’s too weak (I think, maybe there's a super version?). I'm considering things like cotton or flax in casein glue or pine resin... but I doubt it will work.

(And my last casein glue experiment stunk like rotten milk for weeks!)

Last night I dreamt I was on a train, and a bunch of people that looked like they were on a business junket sat down around me. I realised on one side was Jeff Bezos, and the other Tim Cook.

I made small talk with Bezos, but really I couldn't think of anything substantive to say to either of them. But I've been mulling, and I have it!

TIM DO YOU REALISE WHEN I SEARCH IN SPOTLIGHT FOR ONE OF MY ARTWORKS THAT I PAINSTAKINGLY PAINTED IT CALLS IT A “PHOTO" FROM AN “APP”?! ANGRY FACE

When I’m browsing artist's bios, I see a lot, but there's still a lot number with . It's been an exhausting couple of years, huh?

On the other hand, NFTs turned out to be a bunch of nothing in the end, and I feel like just ignoring the whole thing would have worked.

I feel like maybe this is true of AI ‘art’. It's boring. It doesn't even need a backlash.

I am making a website of my grandfather, Raymond “Joe” Loudon’s art. Artists like him have virtually no presence on the internet, which is hardly surprising, but a shame.

The largest part of the job is getting my photogrammetry of his carvings working - they are probably his strongest work. But he was a published poet, and his paintings were pretty good too:

We used to paint together when I was a teenager. I wouldn’t say he taught me how to paint, our approaches were quite different. He almost sculpted his pictures, big, slow, definite motions. Lots of consideration. Whereas I flit about my paintings like butterfly with concentration deficit.

His painting is the first one, mine the second. I think he cheated and made up the kangaroo, I don’t remember it there.

Final Cut Pro, Logic and Xcode were the ‘pro apps’ of the Mac era, but the pro apps of the iPad are tools like Procreate. Though iPad has moved towards the Mac over time, it's unlikely to replace it. Traditionally, Apple hasn’t really provided a whole lot of dedicated APIs a high-end illustration app could take advantage of; perhaps that is one of the axes of progression Apple could double down on, and maybe a new first-party AI-enhanced, layered, pro drawing app would make sense for dogfooding?

Procreate marketing photo

john,
@john@sauropods.win avatar

@stroughtonsmith Speaking as someone that uses Procreate professionally, Procreate is an extremely streamlined painting app, and would not benefit from more features. There’s a reason people use it over more capable apps like Affinity Photo for iPad.

The problem remains iPad OS’s clunky app-centric way of handling files. It’s painful to move images between applications, arrange large numbers of artworks, have an automated backup system, etc. It was a fundamental mis-design they are stuck in.
