Poking around the Gaza death toll, I'm seeing 28,858 as of yesterday, which is an average of 145/day since 10.1; yesterday was 83. The intensity of the warfare keeps decreasing, at least if the current status quo of no full-scale ground assault on Rafah continues. https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/83-palestinians-killed-in-gaza-in-last-24-hours-death-toll-climbs-to-28-858/3140342

Update: it's 113/day since 10.2. So yesterday was atypically light but also the daily death toll keeps steadily falling, it's not just a one-day fluke. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/2/10/israels-war-on-gaza-live-death-toll-nears-28000-as-rafah-assault-looms

@Alon One theory I heard from a journalist I trust on a Times of Israel podcast: Among other things that caught Israel off-guard, we weren't ready for urban warfare. The original incursion was pretty much "Hulk Smash," but we learned over the first few months how to fight there efficiently, with much more effective, targeted work.

@Alon What do you mean by "10 years ago the estimate was 400 dead,"?

My step-brother-in-law is a famous metal musician and is now getting into scoring music, or so he says on IG.

Studying Hans Zimmer. Or something. He says and does a lot on social media, I can't keep up between his numerous product endorsements, partnerships, and brand-supporting commercial activities. I don't think he's ever "hearted" a single thing I've done.

Our musical tastes overlap on the fringes but that's it. We have never collaborated, I just couldn't get him to respond to me about it. I don't feel like we had a falling out, we talked a lot on a trip together but he seems fairly locked in his own world of high octane metal and overbearing ego projection into the cybersphere.

In other words, he's a rock star. :)

He is a serious guitar gearhead too and if the "film scoring" brag is real, I am predicting he will start a modular or do some kind of enormous expensive custom synth within the next year. Maybe two tops.

@c_reider @dtauvdiodr It really throws me when I look at lists of current "electronic music" and it looks like it's all more or less commercial dance music. When I hear the term, I remember staying in my college's SoundLab all night coaxing sounds from the ARP 2600. I brake to avoid metronomic thudding.

What do people use to type and write?

Every time I get to the computer to try and write through typing, I get stuck trying to decide which app I should use. Perfectionism kills me. I never know what to plan for. Or I never know when to stop trying to decide which is the right app.

jzitt,
@jzitt@c.im avatar

@dtauvdiodr I do most of my writing in Workflowy. It might be an odd choice, but I've been using it for a lot of different things for over a decade. For my posts/newsletter recently, I've been writing there then exporting and pasting the content into Facebook and my newsletter.

It isn't optimal, due to the differences in standards: Workflowy, Markdown (which my newsletter uses), and Facebook recognize and treat links very differently.

But it's what I use. A big thing is that it means that I don't wonder what to use to write. I'm not a perfectionist -- I'm a big believer in adequate tools.

(And, of course, I often write music in LaTeX using Overleaf. But that wouldn't work f9r most people :-) )

People of Mastodon!

This Sat., Aug. 12, at 3:30 pm ET ...

... I'm doing a short online talk about "Rewilding Your Attention"

It's part of Medium Day

COME ON BY! Free registration here: https://hopin.com/events/medium-day-2023/registration

Shoot me some questions during the talk, it's got Q&A

It's based on my essays on the subject -- first one was this ("friend" link): https://uxdesign.cc/rewilding-your-attention-d518ede18855?sk=377f68cc5c65904ce3d4a00948eccdfd

Do you use the self-serve checkout or go to the human cashier?

jzitt,
@jzitt@c.im avatar

@evan That's hard to answer at this level. I usually use the self-serve at the supermarket downstairs from work when I get an afternoon snack on most work days. In almost all other cases, I go to a human cashier. So I do slightly more purchases with self-serve, but I get more items with a human. None of the poll's possibilities seem right.

Advice needed on recommending groups:

I would like to mention groups in the daily picks, but this means the post itself would end up in the group, and if people mention the group's address in their replies, the replies would end up in the group too.

I could mention the groups with spaces in the address, but would everyone understand why I'm doing it? Would they find it easy to remove the spaces?

Anyone have thoughts on the matter?

jzitt,

@FediFollows Are there any standard workarounds, such as, for some text search tools, putting a backslash before an at sign?

I've been reflecting on some (amazing!) conversations here. I think we often get reductive in the way we talk about writing because what we're trying to say what is actually too complex to say another way. We're supposed to stumble a bit as we talk about stories and how we create them. We're crafting an experience that just can't be simplified into a few words.

jzitt,
@jzitt@c.im avatar

@mcmullin @allisonwyss @klforslund @composers I can rarely say what a piece of music or video that I've made is supposed to mean. In the film I'm making now, every time I look at the dance layer, it seems to mean something different. The best that I can hope for is that someone doesn't see/hear it as saying something that I wouldn't have wanted to say.

The surprising part is not that math grad students named Cox and Zucker would come up with the idea of writing a paper together just as a joke.

It's that they followed through after they became professors, and wrote a paper that was actually rather significant.

There was a sound of a distant hit of two rockets. Then distant sirens. Then the phone screamed in the voice of a worm from the Worms: Armageddon at the top of the lungs (which are abundantly absent): "Incoming!" then followed with a gnarly laugh. Everything is fine here in Malha, Jerusalem, though. But Bethlehem was hit, according to the apps.
