When I see out the window that it's raining, I don't bother stepping outside to verify that it's wet. I've got years of experience that I've learned from.

When I hear a black American say that they felt unwelcome somewhere, I don't demand they produce evidence. I've got years of experience that I'm (finally) learning from.

Well now. It looks like Bluesky will have to deal with their Jack Dorsey issue sooner rather than later, after his recent history with promoting anti-vaccination crank RFK Jr. came to wider attention, because this isn’t just some harmless billionaire obsession, they’re literally killing people, bringing back diseases that were almost wiped out like measles.

Bluesky members are not happy and some are calling for Dorsey to be thrown off the Bluesky board.

I've barely glanced at the field, but "something rich people, and the intellectuals they hire, want to use to distract us from their determination to not address current problems (and their roles in them)" is how I've tagged it.

It's always good to have all the supporting details, but wonder if you think there's much about that take that needs correction?

After McCarthy used the debt ceiling as a gun to extort the nation: "I want to commend Speaker McCarthy," adds President Biden. "Both sides operated in good faith."

Without GOP’s fascism to hold over our heads, Democrats' performance would generate little fervor for re-election - and so, apparently, they will always do their best to keep the GOP fascists around as a credible threat.

So he should have torn them apart so that the next time he needs them they personally want to hurt him back?

These are politicians, and some of them are awfully petty, and they control the house of representatives.

I want to repeat that: they control the house. Getting stuff done in face of that fact is what matters to me. And turning coping with that into a "D's want fascists" conspiracy rots our brains.

collection for sale. After years of collecting, my 40+ piece African Art collection is for sale. My kids are not interested, and I want it to go to someone who shares my passion for it. I’ve had decades of enjoyment, now it’s time to pass that along to someone else. The collection consists of masks, wooden figures and carved wooden pieces, three large framed Batik pieces depicting dance and village life, two very large, museum quality pieces of Kente Cloth and a beaded leather woman’s apron. If you’re interested DM me and we’ll talk. I’ll forward images and prices to serious collectors.

Valid points, but the fact that they put a Daily Caller alum on as the "moderator" was left unaddressed.

It would have been great if she had asked the graduates "what will you do if you're offered a job by the Daily Caller? What will you do if you meet the classmate currently sitting next to your in three years, and they're working for the Daily Caller?"

If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.

Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

Mastodon has not been been tested "at scale" yet when it comes to social factors.

If it does become a success, i.e. a wide variety and large number of people get on board, the a-holes, scammers, and bots will flood here. I sincerely hope the processes in place will keep it good, but do you really think they have been tested yet?

I make no comment about the journalist but...what an odd job title from the BBC: "disinformation & social media". What does it say to lump the two together? How does it devalue public discourse on social media? Is there a disinformation & Murdoch media beat? A disinformation & politicians' beat?

    jztusk,

There should be the last two, but here's why there isn't (the following is said very bitterly): disinformation is a luxury good, and we only allow the rich and powerful to use it. Plebs using it is like a homeless guy with a Lambo - something's wrong here and we must investigate.

Might I share my Black experience of ending up on Mastodon?
I was with the queer disabled BIPOC art community on Twitter. They're more internet savvy than the average internet user. So groups within groups connected to groups of people.

Many were making comics online and selling at conventions since the days of Angelfire and Geocities. 1990s.

When sht began to hit the fans, folks had relied on twitter. Sure they had their own sites... but...
