I spent 20+ years on the hedonic treadmill, only to realize it doesn't lead anywhere. Now I'm a metamodern hippe living in the far north with my husband https://unstraight.club/@Nightwolf and our two dogs. My passion project right now is a contemporary urban space opera called "The Psychonaut Chronicles". See pinned threads for more about me and where I live. I alt-text images and expect the same from you.

@Thoreau @ElleGray the real stuff starts happening once the ants get fed up. There's over two million of them for each and every one of us. I'm fairly sure two million ants could take down one human (I hope I never get to find out).

This might also be inspired by me finishing Children of Time.

U.S. maternal death rates almost doubled between 2014 and 2021. Black women are disproportionately harmed by this: black individuals are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related deaths than white individuals.

Tip for sci-fi authors:

If you're interested in academic discourse regarding interstellar travel, you should check out the I4S quarterly newsletter. It's free, and the digest is really worth checking out.

Their summary of the upcoming paper “Development of a Model Framework for Examining Language and Cultural Issues in Human Starfaring Civilizations” was really thought-provoking.

"Should we Colonize (Interstellar) Space?" too!

If you read news, you’ve probably heard about Tesla’s conflict with Swedish union IF Metall.

It got me thinking about other examples of “the Swedish model” and how to explain it to, say, an American.

The spirit of the law is common sense to me: it is about markets being self-governing by the involved parties. The state is the keeper of the rules the players agree on. You can see it in government agencies like the National Board for Consumer Disputes

An update on Redditanic's sinking and Steve Huffman’s megalomania:

Large subs are being nuked of their mods. r/mildlyinteresting had their whole mod team suspended and removed. r/TIHI and r/interestingasfuck show up as unmoderated (and therefore open to scabs to apply to become mods).

At least two of these have had polls and overwhelming user support for the protests.

In The Good Place lingo: Steve Huffman is a giant forking bench who takes cork up the ash for pennies.

One curious thing that changed after my Ayahuasca therapy:

Before, whenever I dreamt I could fly, I never really could take off. It was always a source of frustration.

I’ve never experienced that after. Now, when I can fly in my dreams, I really can fly.

I’m sure there’s a really interesting Jungian analysis of this.

I sometimes think about the existential dread civilization in the far future of the Milky Way will feel when peering into deep space.

There will be a handful of other galaxies (those that we are gravitationally bound with) in the void - beyond that, there will only be darkness since the expansion of space will be such that no light from the rest of the universe can reach us.

What stories will they spin about their lonely island of matter and light in an otherwise dark void?

800 dollars for a reservation. People making five figures per year on making reservations and then selling them. So. Many. Different. Services. This is rent-seeking on restaurants, because they don't get paid, and take the losses on no-shows.

Fascinating read about the morally ambiguous ecosystem of table reservations in New York.

OTOH, I have really gotten into eating kimchi lately, and I can't help but imagine Teenage Me would not be impressed to learn Adult Me really gets off on sneaking into the kitchen about eight at night and snacking on hot garlic infused cabbage.

Also, don't even think about kissing me RN.

@Thoreau I found vegan instant noodles of the more premium quality: kimchi ramen from Nongshim. My favorite way of making them is adding a little bit of sauerkraut and gochujang paste to make a hot and sour soup.

I love kimchi!

This is the coolest thing I've seen so far this year: what flying into a black hole would look like.

NASA has created this simulation on their super computer and it is a hauntingly beautiful and completely mind-blowing sight.

If you want more once you've seen the visual with explanation below, check out their 360 video of it. That in VR would be a ride you could charge for.

Ellen DeGeneres: “I got kicked out of show business”.

No, sweetie, you were cancelled because you are a horrible person to anyone you deem below you, while stroking the egos of anyone you consider above you.

You bullied people on your show, both guests and coworkers.

You were cancelled because people saw the real you and realized that you're petty, unkind, and a sociopath who posed as a good person.

A few days ago I read a quote I can't get out of my mind:

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”

This is Project 2025 in a nutshell.

"I think, therefore I am" has aged like milk, and I think this makes Descartes overrated as a philosopher (this being his first principle and all).

As late as last Friday, a group of academics in relevant fields, signed “The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness", which says pretty much the same thing as the Cambridge declaration from 2012: consciousness is likely possessed my most, if not all, animals.

"I feel, therefore I am" is a statement that would have aged like wine.

kazarnowicz,
@kazarnowicz@unstraight.club avatar

I am also convinced that a lot of the suffering animals and humans (like babies) have endured in the hands of trained doctors can be traced back to Descartes:

The conclusion of “I think, therefore I am" in mainstream practice has been “I think, therefore I can feel pain”.

It's preposterous, really.

TIL that there is a word for when rich people procreate with close relatives.

No, it's not “inbreeding”. That's for animals and plebs.

When aristocrats do it, it's “consanguinity”.
