My new life goal is to have a 20+ acre homestead by the time I'm 50. A forever home. Somewhere semi-remote and surrounded by forest. Less people and more animals. Less technology. Less preservatives and toxins. Less noise. Less light pollution. Less reliance on anyone but myself and the land.

[1] During the past two months, I’ve done a TON of gardening research. And I can’t escape the feeling that dozens of the sites that populate the first page of results (I use DDG, not Google) aren’t exactly maintained by humans.

Suspiciously similar “Master Gardener” profiles + site layouts, random bizarre advice mixed in w/ perfectly sensible advice + phrases that don’t seem to belong. I can’t give you any solid proof, but I’m having a difficult time trusting the written web word lately.

[2] Which is why I now tend to stick to a few gardening channels on YouTube, run by humans I can see and gradually start to trust.

And I should emphasize that I used to have a STRONG distaste for relying on video content for anything — as a writer and former journalist, ALWAYS preferred the written word. But I’m changing. I wonder if the world is gradually changing with me.

[3] I’d like to believe this fake-content AI boom and the irritating anxiety that comes with a simple web search will usher in a return to journalism. To written words we rely on and trust.

But the shift to preferring video content has been happening for years. Which is unfortunate since by 2025 or 2026 it will be fast and simple to have entire channels hosted by believable AI facsimiles of real people.

I mean, earlier this year I deep-faked myself speaking Croatian and people bought it, so…

@canrith6696 I get it! I felt that way once, and I still WANT to feel that way today. But my trust has eroded to the point where if I don’t personally know the person writing whatever that content is, I get suspicious.

@ernie You’re a beacon among that degradation, though. Thanks for all the great content you kick out.

The top ~50 Google searches are people typing in websites without the .net or .com because they can't remember the full domain name. (Including "google" which is hilarious.)

Is this a sad reflection on society, or proof that we need a more advanced search engine that actually answers questions rather than simply serving up promoted links and SEO-optimized clickbait.

I'm tentatively excited about this rumored ChatGPT search engine, even if I still have reservations about the future of AI.

I’ve been playing and enjoying games like Virtua Tennis 4 for more than a decade, and these jokers want to come along and say “we’re absolutely shutting down your SINGLE PLAYER game in two years.”

In the entire history of computing, there has never been a more important time to teach people about than right now.

(And never a worse time for me not to be doing @Linux4Everyone -- so I hope my fellow YouTube and content creators will double down and show people the light!)

Helldivers 2 is the perfect model for a live-service game. The progression is brisk -- you can unlock multiple rewards after almost every session -- the cosmetics and premium battle passes can be earned quickly just by playing, and it definitely doesn't hurt that the game itself is an absolute blast.

If you haven't checked it out, is basically a 3rd person Left 4 Dead meets Halo with a Starship Troopers vibe.

AND PEOPLE ACTUALLY PLAY THE OBJECTIVE!

I absolutely love it.

This sunflower is NOT messing around. Only 7 weeks ago, this was a seed in the ground. Today it's 5 feet 4 inches tall! (~164cm for my European friends)

Pretty wild that Bethesda was like "NAH, you don't need to adjust any graphical settings for #Fallout4 on Steam Deck."

(Tip: you can add "SteamDeck=0 %command%" to the launch settings to reinstate the launcher that has said graphics settings, but still. HUGE foul on the play.)

Achievement unlocked yesterday: First 20-mile (32km) ride... EVER! Got to feast my eyes on beautiful orchards and farmland, Bear Creek, and Black Rascal creek.

This ride felt like tangible proof that my decision to ditch alcohol and eat healthier (more cooking from scratch, less ultra processed foods) is paying off.

Life is good.

Essential weekend listening as the weather heats up!

The first time I bought this album, I was 12 years old. I'd heard "Pour Some Sugar On Me" on the radio and almost immediately rode my bike to The Wherehouse and spent my hard-earned lawn-mowing money on the cassette. Outside of Pyromania and Hysteria, I didn't really stick with Def Leppard, but this album is absolutely timeless for me.

I spent all of this morning doing something long, long overdue.

@tio @nextcloud Considering Google gives you 15GB for free (which you pay for with your privacy and data) and you provide 20GB, I would honestly say it’s pretty generous.
